2009 NFL Mock Draft: 16-20
Written March 3, 2009 by Jack Jones
One of our handicappers, Craig Trapp, has been working on his previews for the 2009 NFL draft. He’s one of those guys who never gets tired of football and believes that he can get a head start on making NFL picks for the upcoming season if he knows the needs and wants of each team heading into draft day. He’s already gave us his NFL draft predictions on picks 1-5, 6-10, and 11-15. Now let’s take a look at who he beleives will go in spots 16-20.
16. San Diego Chargers
Needs: Offensive Tackle
This team needs help at the edge of the line, but could also be in the market for depth at both defensive end and linebacker. In what seems to be a common situation this year, they might be better off trading down for more picks.
Pick: Brian Cushing
I see the outside linebacker from USC being a very nice fit for this team. He’s a good tackler, can rush the passer, and is flexible enough to do other things. He is incredibly atheltic and would be a great addition this deep in the draft. If one of the top offensive lineman is still left the Chargers would love that, but since they won’t be they’ll settle for a guy like Cushing.
17. New York Jets
Needs: Quarterback
No more Favre means this team will be in the market for a quarterback yet again. They would love to have either Sanchez or Stafford, but those guys will be gone at this point. The team also needs a some help at other skill positions.
Pick: Jeremy Maclin
The wide receiver from Missouri is the best offensive player that is still left on the board and if someone on this team can get him the ball, could be a play maker.
18. Chicago Bears
Needs: Quarterback & Defensive End
The Bears needing someone under center goes without saying, but Orton did just a good enough job that they will address other needs first. Chicago needs a pass rusher from the end spot and they’ll address that need either here or in free agency.
Pick: Vontae Davis
The cornerback out of Illinois is the best player on the board still available, and he’s too good to pass up on this late in the draft. His older brother is San Francisco 49ers tight end Vernon Davis and could be as talented as any other defensive back in the nation.
19. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Needs: Running Back
The team doesn’t have a lot of glaring holes, but with both of the big name running backs still on the board they would love to snag one of them.
Pick: Knowshon Moreno
Simply too good to pass up this late in the draft. Cadillac Williams has been injured the last two years and Moreno would do a great job of boosting the ground game.
20. Detroit Lions
Needs: Offensive Line
The Lions will most likely go quarterback early so now they need to get that guy some help. All three of the top lineman will be gone, so they are going to need to stretch and take a guy higher than he probably should go.
Pick: William Beatty
This offensive tackle out of UConn isn’t quite as good as the pick indicates, but the Lions are desperate for blockers.
My Sports Rumors has some different ideas on who is going where with picks 16-20 and Total Pro Sports also likes the Bucs to go with a running back.
