2009 NFL Mock Draft: 21-25
Written March 5, 2009 by Jack Jones
Craig Trapp will continue his 2009 NFL mock draft series with picks 21-25 today. These teams all made the playoffs a year ago, so they do not have the glaring needs that prior teams did. However, a solid pick here late in the first round could be just what that team needs to push themselves over the hump in order to get to the Super Bowl. If you missed his earlier NFL mock draft articles here is his predictions on picks 1-5, 6-10, 11-15, and 16-20.
21. Philadelphia Eagles
Needs: Best Available
The team needed an offensive tackle but went out in free agency and signed Stacy Andrews. Now the Eagles will be looking for the best talent on the board and if any top player slides down this far look for Philly to grab them no matter what position they play.
Pick: Beanie Wells
If the Eagles could get Wells they would love to do so. His power would be a nice compliment to Brian Westbrook’s speed. Plus, he would provide a long term answer because while Westbrook hasn’t shown any deterioration, he has proved to be injury prone and is getting older.
22. Minnesota Vikings
Needs: Secondary
The Vikings lacked consistency last year out of both their cornerbacks and safeties, so this team will look for help in the defensive backfield.
Pick:Â DJ Moore
This Vanderbilt cornerback would be a great addition to the Vikings. This might be a little high for him to be selected, but he fits Minnesota’s need and is the second best corner in the draft.
23. New England Patriots
Needs:Â Defense
The Patriot defense is getting older, so look for them to get help on that side of the ball.
Pick: James Lauranitis
A solid middle linebacker out of Ohio State would compliment last year’s pick, Jerod Mayo out of Tennessee, nicely. He probably won’t be a star in the NFL, but he’s good enough to be an above average player and would be a good fit for the Pats scheme.
24. Atlanta Falcons
Needs: Defense
The Falcons need a playmaker on defense. The offense is pretty solid up and down the roster.
Pick: Clay Matthews
This outside linebacker out of USC would be a great addition to the defense. Atlanta did lose three of their starting linebackers in free agency so they are going to need to fill some gaps here.
25. Miami Dolphins
Needs: Offensive Line & Defensive End
The team doesn’t have that many glaring holes, which is strange because this team was so bad just two years ago. Bill Parcels should go for someone to help him win the war in the trenches.
Pick: Aaron Maybin
This versatile defensive end and outside linebacker from Penn State would be ideal for a team looking for an outside pass rasher. He’s also athletic enough to drop back into pass coverage.
What do you think of Craig’s predictions for the 21st through the 25th pick in the draft? Let’s hear about it in the comments.

Got something to say?

MN Vikings have a need in the secondary as you suggested with pick No. 22. However, they have a greater need on the OL at Right Tackle and now at Center with Matt Birk leaving for the Ravens. They will pick either a tackle or a center at #22. The secondary will have to wait until their picks in Round 2 and 3.

Bob – Great point with the need on the offensive line. I don’t think the Vikings can get one of the top 3 tackles here in this spot, and I agree with Craig that this draft is pretty weak at center. Birk’s loss is going to hurt in my opinion, and the Vikings should probably think about moving up several spots to draft one of the elite tackles or down to fill more needs.
