2009 San Francisco 49ers Mock Draft

Written April 22, 2009 by Black Widow

49ers-2009-mock-draft-042209After taking over as head coach mid-way through last season, Mike Singletary led the San Francisco 49ers to a respectable 5-4 record through their final 9 games. He improved the team’s morale in only a short period of time, and thus the Hall of Fame linebacker was rewarded with a new four-year, $10 million contract in a joyous locker room after the team’s final victory. 27-year-old Jed York was assigned team president, and he along with Singletary will be calling all the shots. As expected, Singletary’s first offseason move was to fire pass-happy offensive coordinator Mike Martz, with an eye toward a more power, run-oriented offense.

1.) Offensive Tackle - The Niners’ offensive line showed big improvement under Singletary in the second half, but still allowed a league-leading 55 sacks. The right tackle position is the biggest glaring need, as the 49ers opted not to pay Jonas Jennings $6.6 million to stay around in 2009 after he finished four of the last six seasons on the injured reserve. Jennings was cut, but the 49ers did sign veteran Marvel Smith from Pittsburgh to add some depth. Good Fits in ‘09 Draft Class: OT Andre Smith (Alabama), OT Garrett Reynolds (North Carolina).

2.) Quarterback - Shaun Hill owns a 7-3 record as a starter, including 5-0 at home, and has earned praise after taking over for the struggling J.T. O’Sullivan under center. Apparently it didn’t please Singletary, who cited quarterback as one of the team’s top needs at the end of the offseason. O’Sullivan was let go to Cincinnati, and that leaves Hill and under-achieving Alex Smith left to compete for the job. The 49ers also signed Damon Huard in the offseason to add some depth. Hill’s arm strength is limited, and the 49ers may look for a stronger arm in the Draft.  Total Pro Sports also notes that new  head coaches tend to push for new quarterbacks. Good Fits in ‘09 Draft Class: QB Mark Sanchez (USC).

3.) Safety - The 49ers’ patience with FS Mark Roman has worn thin. Roman has not intercepted a pass or forced a fumble since 2006, and he just turned 32 in March. He was solely responsible for a few blown coverages in ‘08 and it appears he has lost a step. Starting SS Michael Lewis provided decent enough run support this past season, but his coverage was sporadic at best. Good Fits in ‘09 Draft Class: FS Louis Delmas (Western Michigan).

4.) Outside Linebacker - San Francisco always seems to fail to provide a pass rush season after season. While they could also fulfill that goal by adding another capable sacker off the edge up front, it’s likely the 49ers will instead look for a pass rusher opposite Parys Haralson to upgrade the spot journeyman Roderick Green filled in passing situations last season. Good Fits in ‘09 Draft Class: OLB Clay Mathews (USC), OLB Cody Brown (UConn).

5.) Cornerback - It seems like the perfect time to replace 34-year-old CB Walt Harris who doesn’t have much gas left in the tank and who has clearly lost a step. Fellow starter Nate Clements, who was paid a fortune to sign with the 49ers a few seasons ago, also had his share of surprising lapses in ‘08 and hasn’t provided the consistent Pro Bowl-caliber play the team had expected from him. Good Fits in ‘09 Draft Class: CB Coye Francies (SJSU), CB Gary Harris (USC).
