2009 NFL Mock Draft: Kansas City Chiefs
Written April 7, 2009 by Black Widow
The Chiefs begin Year Two of their rebuilding project with a roster full of young talent but plenty of holes to fill. Their 2008 draft class had big expectations, but did not develop as quickly as they had hoped, yielding just two victories and a last-place finish in the AFC West. Rookie CB’s Brandon Flowers and Brandon Carr along with rookie OLT Branden Albert turned out to be gems, but DT Glenn Dorsey didn’t make an impact in his first season. With Carl Peterson and Herm Edwards gone, new GM Scott Pioli will continue to inject youth into their franchise as they attempt to take a leap forward in this lackluster division. Here are the top five needs I have found for the Chiefs’ 2009 draft.
1.) Defensive End – When a team records just 10 sacks in a season, the fewest in NFL history, it’s fairly obvious it need help at defensive end. The Chiefs D-Line was dreadful at pressuring opposing QB, and heralded DE Tamba Hali had just 3 sacks last year. K.C. desperately needs to target a pass rusher who can put heat on a quarterback, generate sacks and force errant throws. The entire defense would benefit as opposing QB’s wouldn’t be able to just sit in the pocket and find open receivers. Good Fits in ‘09 Draft Class: DE Paul Kruger (Utah), DE Connor Barwin (Cincinnati).  Chiefs Gab has KC taking a defensive end in the first round.
2.) Outside Linebacker – Derrick Johnson will shift to the middle this season, leaving a major void at outside linebacker. Donnie Edwards, who turns 36 in April, was cut by the team in the offseason. Demorrio Williams didn’t pan out last year after signing him from Atlanta last offseason. Kansas City’s defense finished 31st in ‘08, so adding an impact linebacker will be one of its top priorities. Most expect Aaron Curry to be the Chiefs’ top pick. Good Fits in ‘09 Draft Class: OLB Aaron Curry (Wake Forest), MLB Jason Philips (TCU). Aaron Curry is the first round pick for the Chiefs in the CSC Mock Draft.
3.) Offensive Guard – A terrible right side of the offensive line often disrupted Kansas City’s rhythm and hurt its rushing attack last year. Free agent ORG Adrian Jones was the weak link, and he is unlikely to be back as a Chief. A right guard who could immediately step in and stabilize the line would go a long way in improving the offense as a whole. Adding OG Mike Goff from San Diego should help. Goff has started all 16 games in 8 of the last 9 seasons, but he is now 33 and is not the long-term solution. Good Fits in ‘09 Draft Class: OG Kraig Urbik (Wisconsin), C Max Unger (Oregon), OT T.J. Lang (Eastern Michigan). Arrowhead Pride shows the team has brought in several offensive guards for private workouts.
4.) Quarterback – The Chiefs traded for Matt Cassel in the offseason, solidifying their No. 1 starter this season. But Tyler Thigpen and Brodie Croyle aren’t proven winners, and the Chiefs might be looking for a gem late in the Draft to compete for the No. 2 job. Croyle has been too brittle to trust under center, and Thigpen showed signs of solid play but wasn’t consistent the entire year. Good Fits in ‘09 Draft Class: QB Stephen McGee (Texas A&M).
5.) Wide Receiver - Kansas City clearly has one of the league’s rising starts in Dwayne Bowe, but the team needs someone opposite him who can command some defensive attention. Though Mark Bradley showed potential late last season, he is not a legitimate No. 2 wideout and is injury-prone. A speedy receiver who can stretch the field and make big plays would add a new dimension to an offense that’s on the rise. K.C. did sign WR Bobby Engram from Seattle, along with unproven guys in Terrance Copper from Baltimore and C.J. Jones from New England. The Chiefs are hoping for anything out of the latter two, but Engram is 36 years old and has clearly lost a step. Good Fits in ‘09 Draft Class: WR Brian Robiskie (Ohio State). Fantasy College Blitz talks about the possibility of the Chiefs grabbing Crabtree to give Cassel another weapon.

Got something to say?

How could you not mention Everette Brown when discussing possible selections for the Chiefs in the 1st round. He has all the intangibles that make Curry so attractive (work ethic, maturity, etc), while having the flexibility to play either DE or OLB. He is also the best pass rusher in the draft– despite what some believe about Orakpo, who simply uses speed to get around the edge.
Everette Brown is the impact player that the team desperately needs. The game changer that the Chiefs have been missing since Allen departed for the Vikings.
Regarding QB, if the Chiefs are looking for a late round gem, why not mention QB Nathan Brown? He was universally praised for his combine performances and was the only QB that Kansas City spoke face-to-face with.
Just A Quick Note.. Bobby Engram Played with the Seattle Seahawks last year not the 49ers.
Mathew,
Though I listed the No. 1 need for Kansas City as the DE position, that doesn’t always mean that the Chiefs are going to take a player at that position. They are usually going to take the most talented player, and considering Aaron Curry is the most talented overall player in the Draft, he is likely going to go No. 3 to the Chiefs as they won’t likely pass him up.
If I thought the Chiefs were going to get a DE as the No. 3 overall pick, then Brown and possibly even Orakpo would have been mentioned. But they’ll likely get a guy like Paul Krueger or Connor Barwin in later rounds after selecting Curry first. I appreciate your knowledge of players in the Draft and what the Chiefs need because it certainly looks like you know what you are talking about.
And Jim,
Thanks for the correction, you are right on the money. To be honest I knew Bobby Engram played for Seattle, and I’m not really sure why I listed the 49ers as his former team last year.
I say first draft pick we draft Arron Curry Then we draft on offinsive lineman. Then tight end or Wide reciever. After that the one that want picked before.
We dont need a linebacker because we have Mike Vrabel, Zach Thomas, Derrick Johnson, And i hope arron Curry.
We dont need a Qb because I think Tyler Thigpen is great.
We probably should get a defensive end early.
