2009 NFL Predictions: Cincinnati Bengals

Written August 20, 2009 by Nick Scarpa

cincinnati-bengals-predictions-2009It has been four years since the Cincinnati Bengals have won the NFC North title and it could be four more. The Bengals have won only 19 games in the last three seasons and their roster is now well behind the Steelers and Ravens. Carson Palmer is still an elite QB that will be depended on to save head coach Marvin Lewis’s job in 2009. Palmer’s gives Cincinnati a “scorers chance” in any ballgame. If the Bengals defense can find a way to rush the passer and the offensive line can tighten up, Cincy could very well end up winning 6 or 7 games.  You can pick up an extra $500 bonus to bet on the NFL with this season when you sign up for a new account with BetUS and make a deposit of $500 or more!

Cincinnati’s offense lives and dies on the right arm of Carson Palmer and was pathetic last year when he was injured. Palmer has battled knee and elbow injuries but appears to be 100% healthy heading into 2009. When he is healthy Palmer is a super-accurate pocket passer with a rocket arm and good field vision. Palmer is not very mobile however and he will be working behind a leaky O-Line. RB Cedric Benson will be counted to keep the offense more balanced and showed some glimpses of his potential last season. If the offensive line can give Palmer time in the pocket he has a fast group of WR’s in Chad Ochocinco, Laveranues Coles and Andre Caldwell to hit deep.

The Benglas defense plays hard but has virtually no pass-rush to speak of. The pass-rush was worst in the NFL with 17.5 sacks and must find a way to get after the QB better. With a fast and physically gifted set of linebackers the Bengals were stingy enough to be ranked 12th in the NFL in yards allowed. OLB Keith Rivers was having a monster 2008 before getting injured in game 8 and is primed for a breakout season. The D-Line has a solid set of Defensive Tackles to plug the middle with Domata Peko and Pat Sims. The secondary has a pair of solid cornerbacks, and some hard-hitting Safeties with a new addition in Roy Williams from Dallas. The Bengals have a solid kicking game but their special teams are suspect elsewhere.
