2009 NFL Predictions: Seattle Seahawks

Written August 20, 2009 by Nick Scarpa

seahawks-predictions-2009The promising mews for the 2009 Seattle Seahawks is that there dismal 4-12 season is over and they can start fresh. The bad news is that the team no longer has the stout defense that made them the cream of the crop in the NFC West. Seattle is still the second most talented team in the NFC West and iit will be up to new coach Jim Mora to get the most out of them. If the Seahwaks can somehow learn how to win on the road they can be the champs of the NFC West if the Arizona Cardinals have a Superbowl hangover. Durability issues and a suspect running game should keep the Seahawks a step below Arizona however for a 2nd place finish in the West.

New offensive coordinator Greg Knapp plans to keep the West Coast scheme that Mike Holmgren used last season but wants a more balanced attack. 34-year old QB Matt Hasselbeck is hoping that is ailing body will hold up for another season. Hasselbeck is a leader and a competitor that can still make plays when healthy. Hasselbeck’s supporting cast however, is not what it once was when he had Shaun Alexander toting the pigskin. The running game and O-Line are only average. The receiving core added possession WR T.J Houshmanzadeh for $40-million which should help Hasselbeck, but the wideouts overall are only above-average.

Seattle plans to be more aggressive on defense this season while still employing their base Cover-2 scheme. An already stocked Seahawks front seven got even deeper and more talented with the addition of 1st round pick Aaron Curry. Curry was considered the best defensive player in the draft and will play next to Pro-Bowl MLB Lofa Tatupu. The D-line is undersized and is somewhat susceptible to the run but have decent skills harassing QB’s. The undersized secondary yielded the most passing yards in the NFL last season and must return to form for Seattle to improve. Injuries took a toll on the pass-rush which could be reason for the secondary’s struggles, but they underachieved nonetheless. Special Teams are in the NFL’s top-10.

Regarding: “The D-line is undersized” Seattle’s starting D-line of Redding, Cole, Mebane, and Kerney averages about 300 pounds. Few NFL teams have a starting D-line that heavy. Additionally they have backups as heavy as Red Bryant (325).
