2009 North Texas Mean Green NCAA Football Predictions
Written July 1, 2009 by Jason Lowry
It was not a good season at all for the North Texas Mean Green football team in 2008, as they failed to win a game in conference play going 0-7, and had just one win on the season over a very bad Western Kentucky team. The Mean Green had very little go right for them last season, as they scored just 19 points a game while giving up nearly 45 points on the defensive side of things. The Mean Green have reason to believe they can turn things around in the near future, as they have 16 returning starters and only 6 seniors expected to start this season.
On offense the Mean Green will hand over the quarterback duties to redshirt freshman Riley Dodge, and while this kid has the makings of being a really good quarterback, its hard to imagine he will come in and shine right away. One of the few seniors on the offensive side of things will be running back Cam Montgomery, who should improve on his 928 rushing yards and 9 touchdowns from a year ago with an offensive line that stacks up there with the best of them in the Sun Belt Conference. Senior left guard Gabe Holivay is the only other senior starter on this side of the ball, so if the Mean Green show improvement this season, they could really be ready for a big season in 2010. At receiver the Mean Green lost four of their top five receivers from 2008, and they have to find a way to replace the production of Casey Fitzgerald, who had a remarkable season last year with 113 catches for 1,119 yards and 6 scores. With all the departures it has paved the way for sophomore Tyler Stradford, who transfered from Oklahoma and sophomore Sam Roberson. Also expected to be apart of the passing game are juniors Jamaal Jackson and Michael Outlaw. Overall this unit has some potential to return to the high flying offense of 2007, but a lot will depend on how fast Dodge can find a groove under center. The defense was plain awful last season for the Mean Green but with nine returning starters this unit should vastly improve on their 2008 season. Up front the Mean Green return both defensive end in senior Eddrick Gilmore and sophomore Brandon Akpunku, with Gilmore being one of the top ends in the Sun Belt conference. Junior Shavod Atkinson and senior Draylen Ross are expected to take over at defensive tackle, and these guys just need to eat up space and allow the linebackers to roam around and make the big plays. The reason I say that is the Mean Green have a very solid group at the linebacking position led by senior Tobe Nwigwe, who not only led the team with 111 tackles last year, he also had the most interceptions with 3. There isn’t much of a drop off on the outside with junior Graig Robertson and redshirt freshman Jeremy Phillips. The Mean Green return all 4 starters in the secondary, and this unit should only get better as time rolls on with three sophomores starting. Senior corner Antoine Bush is not only the oldest but the best of this bunch, and could very well end up with 1st/2nd team all-conference honors if he can make a few more plays this season. There is no question this unit should be better this season, but with so many young players its hard to imagine this team really posing a big threat to some of the top offenses in this conference. My 2009 Prediction: 8th in the Sun Belt Conference. I don’t think this team is going to lose every conference game like they did a year ago, especially with Western Kentucky joining the conference this season, but I also don’t expect this team to shock anyone either. With 10 starters either sophomores or younger, the future looks very bright for North Texas, just not that bright in 2009.
