2009 Denver Nuggets NBA Finals Betting Odds
Written April 16, 2009 by Jason Lowry
The Denver Nuggets are hoping that this will be the season they finally make it out of the first round of the playoffs, as they have failed to do so in each of the past 5 seasons. The trade of Chauncey Billups for Allen Iverson has transformed this team from an average team to a great team with a real legit shot at winning it all this season. The Nuggets finished up the season at 54-28, good enough to tie the franchise record for wins in the regular season. The Nuggets have earned the No.2 seed out of the Western Conference, but that doesn’t mean it will be easy getting out of the first round, as they are set to face the New Orleans Hornets. The Hornets have been injured all season long and are likely much better than the No.7 seed they wound up with, so the Nuggets better be ready to go or it will be one and done once again. Here is a quick look at why I think the Nuggets will and won’t win the NBA Championship this season.
Why They Will Win It All: While Carmelo Anthony might be the superstar and get all the attention on this team, there is no question that Billups is the real reason why this team is looking at an NBA Championship this season, and his playoff experience is only going to help this team even more. Another reason the Nuggets can win it all this year, is they can score the basketball with the best of them, and if they can get it going and play some defense there is no telling how far this team can go. That means Anthony is going to have to take over games at times, and his ability to score whenever he wants is something you need in the playoffs. While I really like the transformation this team has made from the years past, getting past the best of the Western Conference will be no easy task. Why They Won’t Win It All: Its pretty simple here, the Los Angeles Lakers own the Denver Nuggets and if the Nuggets want any chance of making it to the finals, they will have to find to play better against the Lakers. The Nuggets have won just 1 game against the Lakers in their last 11 chances, and really got beat up by the Lakers last week in Andrew Bynums return to the floor. Before the Nuggets even can think about matching up with the Lakers they have a very tough road to the Conference Championship, as the Hornets will be no easy out, and it won’t get any easier in the 2nd round when they face either the Spurs or Mavericks. I am also not sold on this team’s ability to play defense, and it could be the defining factor that keeps this team from making a serious run this postseason. While I am not sold on the Nuggets chances this postseason, I would not be completely shocked if this team makes it to the conference championship and gives the Lakers everything they can handle.
