2009 Oregon State Football Predictions
Written June 27, 2009 by InfoPlays
Even with a revamped offensive line, the Oregon State Beavers should still put up plenty of points behind the Rodgers brothers. The defense has to start over in some places, and a young secondary could go through some growing pains, although luckily for the Beavers, this doesn’t appear to be a great year for quarterbacks in the Pac-10. Oregon State just seems to find a way to win under head coach Mike Riley, and its experience at quarterback helps the Beavers separate a bit from the middle of the league. NCAA football odds have Oregon State listed at +20000 to win the 2010 BCS National Championship.
Offense: The health of key players is the biggest issue at Oregon State. Quarterback Lyle Moevao had shoulder surgery in Mach and was hoping for a mid-summer return to throwing. How quickly he comes back will determine the starter. Sean Canfield is No. 1 for now. He started two seasons ago but missed the end of his sophomore year and beginning of his junior season while recovering from shoulder surgery. Moevao passed for 2,534 yards and 19 touchdowns last season. Fortunately, the Beavers can win with either quarterback, having the experience at the position that is lacking elsewhere in the Pac-10.
The star is running back Jacquizz Rodgers, who missed the last two games of the season with a fractured bone in his shoulder. He took spring practice easy and should be ready to go this fall. Older brother James Rodgers is OSU’s other critical weapon at wide receiver. James missed the end of last season with a broken collarbone, but still managed 1,833 total yards and scored 10 touchdowns. His outside running on fly sweeps spreads the defense so Jacquizz and duck and dart in between the tackles.

Defense: Eight starters are gone on defense, including the entire secondary. The play at cornerback is crucial. Oregon State likes to leave its corners on an island, freeing up the front seven to stuff the run and get pressure on opposing quarterbacks. The last time the Beavers broke in two new corners was in 2005, and the pass defense was 115th of 117 teams in the nation that season, allowing 298.7 yards/game. Senior Tim Clark will be one starter. He has significant playing time under his belt the past two seasons.
Three players will fight for playing time at safety, with Suaesi Tuimaunei leading the way. Cameron Collins and Lance Mitchell will likely share the other position. Keaton Kristick, Keith Pankey and Dwight Roberson are seasoned outside linebackers. David Pa’aluhi is a first-time starter at middle linebacker. Defensive tackle Stephen Paea anchors the line. The rest of the front four features inexperienced players rotating to help cover up each of their weaknesses.
