2009 New England Patriots NFL Season Predictions
Written June 10, 2009 by Jason Lowry
The New England Patriots will look to return to the Super Bowl this season, as they were forced to go nearly the entire season without their star quarterback Tom Brady, as he was injured on the second drive of the season against the Kansas City Chiefs. The season wasn’t completely lost though, as backup Matt Cassel stepped in and played at a very high level, leading the Patriots to an 11-5 finish, but it wasn’t good enough for the postseason. With a healthy Tom Brady back under center the Patriots should return to the form that had them 1 win away from a perfect season in 2007.Â
There were some changes made in the offseason, as the Patriots first lost GM Scott Pioli to the Chiefs and then later watched offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels accept the head coaching job in Denver. The Patriots didn’t stop there as they went on to trade Cassel and veteran linebacker Mike Vrabel to Kansas City for a 2nd round draft pick. The Patriots did make some key acquisitions this offseason, as they added running back Fred Taylor and wide receiver Joey Galloway to an already potent offense, and picked up cornerbacks Shawn Springs and Leigh Bodden to help sure up the defense. The Pats might also get some help in the secondary out of 2nd round picks Patrick Chung and Darius Butler. The most important thing for this team is Bill Belichick is still the head coach of this football team, and as long as he is calling the shots the Patriots are going to be one of the best teams in the league.Â

The offense should have no problems returning to the form of 2007, where the Patriots finished the regular season a perfect 16-0 and set a number of offensive records. With Cassel under center star wideout Randy Moss had no where near the year he did in 2007, as Moss went from gaining 1,493 yards and 23 touchdowns in 2007 to just 1,008 yards and 11 touchdowns in 2008. With Brady back I think its safe to say that Moss’s numbers will climb back up, and fellow receivers Wes Welker and Joey Galloway should have monster years as well. The running game saw a number of different backs carrying the ball in 2008, as feature back Laurence Maroney missed 13 games due to injury. The Patriots are hoping that with the addition of Taylor that these two can share the load and give the Patriots a much more balanced attack from the ground. At tight end the Pats are hoping that Benjamin Watson can rebound from a pretty poor 2008 season, and give this team a solid threat in short yardage situations. The offensive line remains intact from last year and should improve from an average 2008 season, but the key to the season will be making sure Tom Brady stays off his back, as this team might not be so lucky if Brady goes down again. On defense the Patriots have some questions, as they will have a number of new faces on this side of the ball. One place they should have no problems with is on the defensive line, as they return all 3 starters from a year ago. Both ends Richard Seymour and Ty Warren are coming off solid seasons, and inside Vince Wilfork has turned into a real good player. The Pats also landed defensive tackle Ron Brace in the second round of the draft, and he could end up being a valuable back up. At linebacker the Patriots struck gold last year in rookie Jerod Mayo, but the team needs to start thinking about getting younger at the other three spots. It looks like Pierre Woods will be the leading candidate to fill in for Vrabel, but there is no question that Adalius Thomas and Tedy Bruschi are starting to show their age. The secondary is where the team might be at its weakest. The team hopes that Bodden will be good enough to start opposite of second year player Jonathan Wilhite, who came in and played well in 4 starts last year. Look for Springs to be used more when the team needs three corners on the field to cover the slot receivers. With veteran safety Rodney Harrison retiring that means the team will likely go with a safety duo of James Sanders and Brandon Meriweather. With an explosive offense this unit just needs to keep teams from hitting the big plays, and I have a good feeling they will end up doing just fine. Prediction: 1st in the AFC East (12-4) I think the Patriots have no problem winning the AFC East this season, but I see them running into a very good Indianapolis Colts team in the 2nd round of the postseason, and that is where I see the 2009 season ending for the Patriots.Â

Got something to say?

The Colts? No way. The Patriots are way to loaded this year. The offense is going to be MORE talented then the 2007 season and on defense Belichick went out for cornerbacks the way he did for wide recievers in 2007. Also don’t be surprised if Pacman Jones winds up on the Pats as the Randy Moss addition to the defensive back corps this year. The Colts have an entirely new coaching scenario and Peyton Manning will struggle mightely because of that. The Colts might not even make the playoffs.

I choose the Pats to win the superbowl… they might not go undefeated, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they did and finished the job in 2009.

I choose the Pats to win the superbowl and do what they weren’t able to do in 2007.

With a severely depleted team last season, the pats
were only a dropped pass away from beating the colts
in their house. With the coaching changes and no harrison
I don’t think Manning is going to have a very comfortable
season? I think the only thing that will stop the patriots
winning the superbowl this year will be injuries?
I think the pats go 13-3 and reclaim the Lombardi Trophy

Does Jason Lowry get paid for his writing? The Patriots weren’t “1 win away from a near perfect season”, they were one win away from a PERFECT season. They did in fact have a “near perfect” season. It’s not a question of ignorance, or “the English language falling apart” or other bitter old man crap, it’s just lazy writing. If you are a professional writer then write like a professional and put a little effort into it. Hell anything you sign your name to (or even if you don’t) you ought to care enough to put out your best effort. We always groan when a sports professional is obviously coasting. Even if you aren’t a professional, have some personal standards.
