2009 Preakness Stakes Betting Props

Written May 13, 2009 by Steve Janus

2009-preakness-stakes-propsOnline sportbooks like BodogLife have a long history of providing a variety of exotic bets on major sportsing events, and this year’s 134th running of the Preakness Stakes at Pimilco Race Course is no exception.  Let’s take a look at this year’s Preakness Props, see if any are worth betting, and, for entertainment’s sake, look at those potential prop bets that are bit outrageous.

One of the options you have for betting the Preakness is a prop on the margin of victory for the horse that finishes first.  Current odds show the likelyhood of the winning horse coming in more than 2 lengths ahead of second place is the most likely to happen at 1/3 odds, while you can bet first and second being closer than 2 lengths at 3/2 odds, with the odds of the winner coming in exactly 2 lengths ahead of second place being placed at 13/1.

Last year’s Preakness winner was Big Brown, who finished the Preakness in 1:54:80, a solid time, but really about average for the track in the modern history of the race.  If you think any of the horses in this year’s field can best that time, you can bet on it at +145 odds, if you think this year’s Preakness winner will be slower than that time, you’ll have to bet it at -190.

The favorite in the Preakness Stakes this year is filly, Rachel Alexandra.  No filly has won the Preakness since Nellie Morse in 1924, when the Preakness was a shorter race.  Nevertheless, you can bet on Rachel Alexandra to beat Nellie Morse’s 1924 time of 1:57:20 at -900 odds, or you can bet against her beating that time at +450 odds.

All eyes will be on Mine That Bird after he won the Kentucky Derby, and you can bet on where exactly he will finish in the 2009 Preakness.  Current odds for a 1st or 2nd place finish are 13/2, while a 3rd-5th finish is 2/1 odds, and finish of 6th or worse comes in at 1/3 odds.

It seems like an odd thing to bet on, but one of the prop wagers offered is whether or not the TV ratings for the Preakness will beat the Kentucky Derby.  Odds makers don’t think it is very likely, listing the odds for the Preakness ratings to beat the Derby at +1750, where the odds that it won’t best the Derby’s ratings are listed at -3500.

One of the more interesting bets you can make is a prediction on somebody else’s prediction.  With this prop you are betting on which horse you think that NBC Horse Racing analyst, Gary Stevens will pick to win the Preakness.  The odds are as follows:

Rachel Alexandra 1/1
Mine That Bird 4/1
Pioneerof The Nile 4/1
Musket Man 11/2
Papa Clem 6/1
Field (Any Other Horse) 5/2
