2009 Preakness Stakes Picks
Written May 15, 2009 by Anthony Moretti
The Top Contenders: Rachel Alexandra was incredibly impressive in the Kentucky Oaks the day before the Kentucky Derby. She was so impressive that she is likely to be the favorite on Saturday to knock off Mine That Bird, the 50-1 underdog what won the Kentucky Derby this year. The three horses that came in after Mine That Bird in the Kentucky Derby are all running in this year’s Preakness as well. Pioneerof The Nile, Musket Man, and Papa Clem all finished over 6 lengths behind the winner, but were within noses of each other. The Kentucky Derby’s favorite going into the race was Friesan Fire, who will also participate in the Preakness and who will be looking for some major redemption after his 18th place finish at the Derby. There has also been talk about General Quarters being game for this race, after winning the Blue Grass Stakes, and skipped out on the Kentucky Derby. Big Drama is a horse that has a lot of speed and should benefit from drawing the rail.
Race Predictions: There is a ton of speed at the extremes with Big Drama on the inside and Rachel Alexandra on the outside. I predict that that Rachel Alexandra will break early and try to run in front of the field along with Big Drama. Pioneerof the Nile, Papa Clem, and Friesan Fire should make up the second grouping, waiting to make a late move. Don’t expect another incredible stretch run out of Mine That Bird to take the race, but he certianly does have the ability to kick down the stretch, as do General Quarters and Musket Man.

Got something to say?

After watching the race I believe the best 3 year old is Mine That Bird. Everyone is entitled to their opinion but to say Rachel is the best and a super horse is going a bit too far! First off the race was 1 3/16ths not 1 1/4 mi. Next she got the perfect trip and Mine That Bird did not. Next which is very very important in she carried 121lbs. compared to 126lbs. by the colts. So this was a handicap race in all fairness now wasn’t it. They say every 2lbs. over a mile is worth 1 length so you do the math. Finally I can honestly say that this is in no way a great crop of 3 year old colts by any stretch of the imagination. So this is my challenge to Rachels entourage. Run her in the Belmont 1 1/2 mi. at equal weights, 126lbs. If you can beat the colts then you are the 3 year old champion otherwise Rachel is just a very good filly that had everything go her way Saturdays handicap race at Pimlico.
