2009 Samsung 500 Picks & Predictions

Written April 2, 2009 by Jason Lowry

texas-motor-speedwayThis week the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series is headed for a hot one down in Texas, as drivers get ready for the 2009 running of the Samsung 500. Jimmie Johnson finally made his presence felt this season, as he came up with his first win of the season last week at the Goody’s Fast Relief 500. Jeff Gordon continued to be mr. consistent on the 2009 season, as Gordon has finished in the top 6 in every race but one, the Dayton 500 (13th place). Gordon has yet to find the winners circle this season, but still holds a 89 point lead over 2nd place driver Clint Bowyer. The divers will be attacking Texas Motor Speedway this weekend, and its always a good idea to look back at the races in Las Vegas and Atlanta, to get a good idea of who is racing well on this type of track. That means it could be a big weekend for the Busch brothers, as Kyle won in Vegas while Kurt dominated in Atlanta. With the race scheduled to get underway this Sunday, here is my weekly look at the 3 drivers I like to win the Samsung 500.

Kyle Busch +500 odds to win at Sportsbook.com: It hasn’t exactly been the start to the 2009 season that Busch was looking for with just 3 top 5 finishes in the first 7 races, but he does have two wins, and is arguably the 2nd best driver out their behind Jimmie Johnson right now. We already mentioned that Busch raced well at the tracks similar to Texas Motor Speedway. Busch has not won this race in the past, but as we learned last year this driver can win any given week regardless of what track he races on, and when you put him on a track type where he has excelled, it only makes him that much better of a pick to win.

Jeff Gordon +700 odds to win at Sportsbook.com: Its hard to not put this guy in your top 3 with the start he has had to this season, and he had a nice 2nd place finish at Atlanta Motor Speedway earlier this season, but its not like you need a track record to know that Gordon is a legit threat to win every single week, regardless of the fact that he hasn’t won since 2007. Gordon has 40 wins on intermediate tracks in his career, so there is no questioning this guys ability to win. If you want a safe pick in your top 3 and a driver with a real good shot at winning the race this weekend, take Gordon in this one.

Kevin Harvick +2000 odds to win at Sportsbook.com: If you are looking for a driver with some great value and a real legit shot at winning the race this weekend, than I think Harvick is just what you are looking for. Harvick raced well at both Atlanta and Las Vegas, with a 4th place finish in Atlanta and a 12th place finish at Las Vegas. Harvick  hasn’t done much since starting the season with a 2nd place finish at the Daytona 500, but I feel like this race sets up perfect for him, and he will be right there when the final few laps are being ran.
