2009 San Diego State Football Predictions

Written June 30, 2009 by InfoPlays

2009 San Diego State Football PredictionsIf Brady Hoke could lure players to Ball State, the hope for the San Diego State Aztecs is that he can surely get players to come to this big city. There’s a lot of talent at the offensive skill positions and SDSU has 16 returning starters to work with. If Rocky Long is able to work his magic on the defense, then the Aztecs could be a great sleeper pick to compete for an MWC title this season. Sportsbook.com has reduced juice on Friday’s to promote bettors to get in early and take advantage of the NCAA football lines available!

Offense: One of the hottest coaching candidates in the offseason, Grady Hoke brings hope to an SDSU football program that has been down in the dumps for a few years. Hoke went 12-2 at Ball State, and he hopes to have the same success in his first season at SDSU to turn around this 2-10 program from a year ago. The offense has a lot more talent than last year’s record indicates. QB Ryan Lindley showed plenty of promise in his freshman season, passing for 2,653 yards and 16 touchdowns. Senior receiver DeMarco Sampson was a standout in the spring after battling injuries previously in his career here. He caught six passes for 181 yards in the spring game. SDSU’s leading receiver, Vincent Brown, returns along with Jon Toledo.

The Aztecs have been lacking a running game for years. There are veterans ready to change this trend, led by Atiyyah Henderson and Brandon Sullivan. But these guys combined to rush for less than 700 yards last season, and that won’t cut it in a league that produced four 1,000-yard rushers a year ago. The Aztecs were worst in the league and third-worst in the country in averaging just 73.2 yards/game on the ground. Junior Davon Brown made a strong push for playing time in the spring. Hoke demanded a lot of this team in the spring by asking for relentless effort, discipline and mental toughness. That starts up front where the offensive line hasn’t been very physical. If they can hold their own, the talent is there for the passing game to really flourish.

Defense: Rocky Long stepped down from New Mexico after a lengthy tenure there, but the defensive guru didn’t want out of the business. He wanted to get back to coaching defense and away from the demands of being a head coach. SDSU has rarely been known for its defense through the years, so he’ll have his work cut out for him. Last season was typical, as the Aztecs ranked last in points allowed by giving up a lofty 37.2 points/game.

Long is installing his signature 3-3-5 defense, but there is just one returning starter in the secondary. That’s cornerback Aaron Moore, so everyone will be learning the scheme together. Linebacker Luke Laolagi recorded 99 tackles last season and forced three fumbles. Long’s blitzing scheme will turn him loose, which should help improve on the 13 sacks the Aztecs recorded last season. B.J. Williams returns at defensive end after leading the team with 3.5 sacks and earning honorable mention all-league honors. The defensive line is coached by Hoke, but he has little depth to work with. The starters give SDSU a chance for improvement, though.
