2009 San Jose State Football Predictions
Written July 14, 2009 by InfoPlays
Dick Tomey has resurrected a down-and-out program into a competitive one in his four years on the job. Two years ago the San Jose State Spartans went to a bowl game, and now Tomey has to try to forge ahead once more after back-to-back .500 campaigns. This team has talent, but the question remains if it will be enough to compete with the likes of Boise State and nearby rivals Nevada and Fresno State. Offense: The Spartans will surely score more points than they did a year ago after finishing 106th nationally at 18.7 points/game. Coach Dick Tomey has often been on the conservative side offensively, but with the return of QB Kyle Reed and wide receivers Terrance Williams and Kevin Juovich, touchdowns should be much easier to come by. Jorovich missed most of last season with an illness, but he’s a proven playmaker after setting the single-season school record with 85 receptions for 1,183 yards in 2007. Tomey noticed the difference he makes when he’s on the field, as Jurovich was the shining star of spring practice. Even without Jurovich, Reed had a solid ‘08 season completing 64 percent of his passes for 1,563 yards and nine touchdowns.
Junior quarterback Jordan La Secla can’t be counted out after an impressive spring showing. Junior college transfers arriving in the spring were receiver Marquis Avery and running back Lamon Muldrow. Both add offensive punch to this unit, and Muldrow was a workhorse at the JC level. RB Patrick Perry returned in the spring after missing two years with an injury, only furthering the depth at the position. All five starters return up front, with guard Ailao Eliapo the only of the group that started all 12 games last season.

Defense: When Tomey arrived in 2004, the Spartans were at the bottom of the national statistical rankings in nearly every important category. Not any more. Brothers Carl and Duke Ilhenacho lead an ever-improving defense. Duke makes the move from linebacker to safety. He was an All-WAC first-teamer last season and tied for the league lead in interceptions with five, returning a pair for scores. He really did it all, finishing with 66 tackles while finishing second on the team with six pass breakups. This move to safety will help defensive coordinator Keith Burns replenish a depleted secondary.
Carl will wreak havoc up front once again. The versatile senior has 13 career sacks under his belt, and he finished eighth nationally last season with 18.5 tackles for loss, seven coming in the form of a sack. The linebacking corps is solid with three-year starter Justin Cole returning, along with senior Travis Jones who led the team in tackles last season with 72 stops.
