2009 San Jose State Spartans NCAA Football Predictions
Written July 14, 2009 by Jason Lowry
The San Jose State Spartans finished up 2008 at 6-6 overall and 4-4 in WAC play, but were not rewarded with a bowl game for their efforts. This year the Spartans have 15 starters and are once again thinking they can not only compete in the WAC, but once again be apart of postseason play. The WAC is loaded up top with the likes of Boise State and Nevada, and making things even harder is the Spartans have road games against Fresno State, Boise State, Utah State, and Louisiana Tech, not to mention non conference road games against USC and Standford. With that said here is a look at what the Spartans should look like on both sides of the ball in 2009.
On offense the Spartans have 8 starters back for the upcoming season, including senior quarterback Kyle Reed, who led the Spartans last year with 1,563 yards passing and 9 touchdowns to 6 interceptions. At running back the Spartans lost their top back from 2008 in Yonus Davis, but it looks like they have plenty of talent to replace his 558 yards and 3 scores. Last year true freshman Brandon Rutley was the backup for Davis running for 356 yards, and should only improve in his 2nd year. Adding depth to the backfield is the return of senior Patrick Perry, who has missed the last two seasons with injuries, but the guy likely to start the season off is junior college transfer Lamon Muldrow. At wide receiver the Spartans will have to replace their top receiver of 2008 in David Richmond, but should be just fine with the return of senior tight end Terrance Williams and senior wide out Kevin Jurovich. The Spartans also have a couple of up and coming juniors in Marquis Avery and Jalal Beauchman at the receiver position. The offensive line should be locked and loaded for the upcoming season, as all five starters are back from last year, and with the only senior being center Ronnie Castillo, this unit could be one of the best in the conference in 2010. On defense the Spartans have 7 starters back, and with the players stepping in they should end up with one of the top defenses in the WAC this season. Up front the Spartans return one of the best defensive ends in the WAC in senior Carl Ihenacho, who racked up 7 sacks and 11.5 tackles for loss last season. Fellow senior Mohamed Marah returns at the other end spot, while senior Kalvin Cressel steps in to start opposite of senior Adonis Davis at the tackle position. At linebacker the Spartans are loaded as all three starters are back and all three are outstanding talents. Seniors Travis Jones and Justin Cole, both put up some great numbers last season, but junior Duke Ihenacho was one of the best with 5.5 tackles for loss and a team high 5 interceptions. In the secondary the Spartans will be a bit inexperienced with the only one starter back in junior free safety Devin Newsome. Sophomore Tiuke Tuipulotu is expected to take over at strong safety, while junior Brandon Driver and sophomore Peyton Thompson take over at the two corner spots. I think that with all the talent the Spartans have up front, they should get enough pressure on the quarterback to really help the progress of their young secondary. This unit was 2nd in the WAC last year giving up just 22.6 points per game, and I don’t see any reason why they can’t repeat or improve those numbers in 2009. My 2009 Prediction: Tie 3rd in WAC. I am really high on the Spartans this season, and think they are right on track to not only finish in the top 3 of the WAC, but head back to a bowl game for the first time since 2006 and only the 2nd time since 1990. The only concern I have is the difficult road schedule this team has in 2009, but if they can pull off a couple wins on the road and upset Nevada on their home field, they should be right were they need to be to finish in the top 3 of the WAC.
