2009 San Diego State Aztecs NCAA Football Predictions

Written July 28, 2009 by Jason Lowry

San Diego State 2009 PredictionsThe San Diego State Aztecs really struggled to get it going in 2008, as they finished the regular season up at 2-8 and were able to win just one game in Mountain West Conference play. There is hope that the Aztecs will have a much better season in 2009. The lone conference win for the Aztecs in 2008 came in the final game of the year against UNLV, and with 15 starters back and new head coach Brady Hoke running the show, the Aztecs figure to be much more competitive this season.

On offense the Aztecs are hoping for a huge year out of sophomore quarterback Ryan Lindley, who was pretty impressive in his first year as the starter, throwing for 2,653 yards and 16 touchdowns to just 9 interceptions. It looks as though Lindley will have a bunch of very good receivers to throw the football to, as he brings back junior Vincent Brown, and a couple of very good seniors in Roberto Wallace and DeMarco Sampson. The Aztecs had their troubles running the football in 2008, but figure to be much improved this season with senior Atiyya Henderson, junior Brandon Sullivan, and junior Donald Brown all back and ready to go. As far as the offensive line is concerned, there should be some improvement from last season. The Aztecs bring back three starters from last season, but must replace both spots on the ride side of the line. Heading into the fall it looks like sophomore Mike Matamua will step in at right tackle, while redshirt freshman Jimmy Miller is expected to take over at right guard. If Lindley has a big year the offense could really take that next step into becoming a real threat to score the football, as the Aztecs managed just 17 points a game in conference play last season. On defense that Aztecs figure to improve off their performance of 2008, where they allowed teams to score nearly 30 points a game. Up front the Aztecs bring back all 3 starters on the defensive line, led by junior BJ Williams and senior Jonathan Soto at the two defensive end spots. At linebacker the Aztecs bring back two very good players in seniors Luke Laolagi and Nick Sandford. Also back from the 2008 squad is junior Andrew Preston, while fellow junior Marcus Yarbrough is expected to take over at the open outside backer spot. In the secondary the Aztecs figure to be at their weakest with senior corner Aaron Moore the only starter back from last season. It looks as though senior Davion Mauldin will take over at the other corner spot, while junior Jose Perez and sophomore Brandon Davis are expected to start at the two safety positions. If the secondary doesn’t end up being a huge weakness for this team, I think the Aztecs will be able to hang with most of the teams in this division, and possibly play much better on the road, where they are just 2-16 over the last three seasons. My 2009 Prediction: 7th in the MWC ( 2-6) Overall (5-7)
This might seem high for a team that finished last season with just two wins, but I think the Aztecs can beat Southern Utah, Idaho, and New Mexico St in non-conference play, and I think they have a pretty good shot at beating New Mexico and Wyoming at home in conference play. If the Aztecs can steal a road game over Colorado State they could end up even higher in the MWC this season.
