2009 Seattle Seahawks NFL Season Predictions

Written June 25, 2009 by Jason Lowry

Seattle Seahawks 2009 PredictionsAfter four straight years of holding down the NFC West title, the Seattle Seahawks hit a brick wall in 2008 winning just 4 games. It what was Mike Holmgren’s final season as head coach of the Seahawks, and now the team will turn to Jim Mora to head the team in 2009. The Seahawks play in a pretty weak division when you compare it to other divisions around football, and that has this team thinking they can return to the top of the NFC West this season.

While this team needs to just get healthy more than anything, as so many key players went down with injuries last season, the Seahawks did make some big moves this offseason. The Seahawks were able to sign star wide receiver T.J. Houshmanzadeh, corner Ken Lucas, defensive tackle Colin Cole, and fullback Justin Griffith, all of whom should start in 2009. The Seahawks did end up parting ways with a number of players, including wide receiver Bobby Engram, defensive tackle Rocky Bernard, running back Maurice Morris, linebacker Julian Peterson, and offensive tackle Floyd Womack. In the 2009 NFL draft the Seattle Seahawks had the top linebacker in the draft in Aaron Curry fall right in their lap with the No.4 overall pick, and he figures to make an immediate impact on the defensive side of things. The Seahawks added depth to their offensive line in center/guard Max Unger in the 2nd round, while adding another threat at wide receiver in the speedster Deon Brown with their pick in the 3rd round. This is a team that has the pieces to contend, but a number of players have to show they can return to their form after missing a lot of time last season.

How good Seattle is on the offensive side of things will rely heavily on the arm and back of Matt Hasselbeck, who never really got it going last season beacuse of bulging disk in his back. The addition of Houshmandzadeh really takes some pressure off of Deon Branch and Nate Burleson, but the two have to get on the field in 2009, as they combined to make just 9 starts. The Seahawks are switching to a zone blocking attack when running the football, and that should favor both starter Julius Jones and back up T.J. Duckett. The offensive line is a bit of a concern heading into this season, as all five starters expected to play in 2008 finished the season on the injured reserve. The team is counting on the veteran Walter Jones to return to form at left tackle, but he is 35 and coming off left knee surgery. Both center Chris Spencer and right guard Rob Sims must improve, or the rookie Unger will likely take over. At right tackle the Seahawks are hoping to see a much better year out of Sean Locklear, while they just hope to get much of the same out of left guard Mike Wahle. Overall this unit could end up being really good if the line can stay healthy. The combination of Hasselbeck to Housmandzadeh could end up being one of the best in the league, and Jones has the potential to have a real big season running the football. There is no question that the strength of the Seattle defense is at the linebacker position, even though they traded away a Pro Bowl player in Peterson. The rookie Curry will step right in on the outside, and it won’t be long before he is turning in Pro Bowl seasons of his own. The best player of the bunch will be middle linebacker Lofa Tatupu, who could have an even better season playing behind the tackle duo of Brandon Mebane and Colin Cole. The team was able to work out a deal with weak-side linebacker Leroy Hill, and it’s a real good thing when he is the worse out of the starting group. The Seahawks need to get more pressure on the quarterback this season, and that means star defensive end Patrick Kerney needs to stay on the football field, as he played just 7 games last season. Lawrence Jackson and Darryl Tapp will likely split time at the other end spot. In the secondary the Seahawks should have a pretty good corner combo in Ken Lucas and Marcus Trufant, and while the safety duo of Deon Grant and Brian Russell isn’t all that flashy, they did keep teams from hitting the home run against this defense with the deep pass. The group at linebacker is about as good as you will find in a 4-3 system, and if they can get pressure on the quarterback everyone on this side of the ball should benefit. My Prediction: Tie for 2nd in NFC West (8-8) I think this team makes a solid improvement from a miserable 2008 season, but I don’t think they are going to have the talent needed to top the Arizona Cardinals. See who I have winning it all in my 2009 NFL predictions article.
