2009 Southern Miss Golden Eagles NCAA Football Predictions
Written July 16, 2009 by Jason Lowry
The Southern Miss Golden Eagles had rough start to the 2008 season, as they really struggled out of the gates winning just 2 of their first 8 games, but thanks to five straight wins to finish the season, including a come from behind win over Troy in the New Orleans Bowl the Golden Eagles were able to finish up the season with a winning record at 7-6. This year the Golden Eagles enter their second season under head coach Larry Fedora and have a remarkable 19 starters back from last season, and there is no question that this team is thinking about a Conference USA title.
On offense the Golden Eagles bring back everyone from last year expect for tight end Shawn Nelson, where junior Jonathan Massey is expected to take over, and there are a of people that think Massey will have a big year this season. At quarterback the Golden Eagles are hoping for a huge season out of sophomore Austin Davis, as Davis had a remarkable freshman season throwing for 3,128 yards and 23 touchdowns to just 8 interceptions. Another player that should have a monster season this year is sophomore wide out DeAndre Brown, who really played well last year with 67 catches for 1,117 yards and 12 touchdowns in his freshman campaign. Joining Brown at receiver will be seniors Freddie Parham and Gerald Baptiste, but there is no question that all the focus will be on Brown this season. The Golden Eagles could have an outstanding duo at running back as well, as they bring back senior Damion Fletcher and add freshman running back Kendrick Hardy to the mix as well. Fletcher wound up running for 1,313 yards and 10 touchdowns last season, and should only improve on those numbers this season with the entire offensive line back. While Hardy’s impact won’t be huge this season, he looks as though he will be the back of the future for this football team. Also, Davis is an added threat in the running game, as he added 508 yards and 9 touchdowns last season. This offense scored nearly 34 points a game last season, and while thats pretty good, I think this offense is going to be even better this season. Bet the Golden Eagles this season at Sportsbook.com.

The Golden Eagles defense ranked second last year in Conference USA giving up just under 24 points a game, and with 9 starters back I don’t see how this unit doesn’t at least repeat those numbers this season. Up front all four starters are back on the defensive line, led 2nd team All-Conference defensive tackle Anthony Gray, who led the team with 6 sacks last season. The team will have to find two new replacements at linebacker, as junior Martez Smith is the only starter back from last season. Heading into the fall it looks as though sophomores Korey Williams and Scottie Williams have the early edge at becoming the starters, but look out for junior college transfer Hendrick Leverette to make an impact as well. The Golden Eagles have all four starters back in the secondary, and this group could end up being the best in all of Conference USA this season. Junior Chico Hunter and senior Eddie Hicks form a very good duo at the safety position, while junior CJ Watson and senior Andre Watson are both very good players at the corner positions. I look for a very good year out of this defense, but the team will need whoever ends up starting at linebacker to play well to keep this team from having a bit of a drop off. My 2009 Prediction: 1st in Conference USA East Division. I not only like the Golden Eagles to win the East Division, but they are my favorite to win the Conference USA title game as well. In fact I think the Golden Eagles could flirt with a perfect record this season, but that means this team would have to win on the road against Louisville and Kansas and win a tough game against Virginia at home, not to mention a very tough road game against East Car
