2009 San Antonio Spurs NBA Finals Betting Odds

Written April 16, 2009 by Jason Lowry

spurs-basketballThe San Antonio Spurs have been the most dominant team in the NBA over the last 10 years winning 4 NBA Championships, and could very well be on their way to another championship run this season. That run though took a huge hit with the injury to Manu Ginobili, as he will be of no use to this team during the postseason, meaning Tim Duncan and Tony Parker are going to have to lead this team to victory. The Spurs earned the No.3 spot out of the Western Conference this season and are set to take on the Dallas Mavericks in the first round of the playoffs. The Spurs made a deep run into the playoffs last season before losing to the Lakers in the Conference Championship series. Here is a quick look at why I think the Spurs can and can’t win the NBA Championship this season.

Why They Will Win It All: This team simply knows what it takes to win in the postseason, as there track record speaks for itself over the last decade. The Spurs are not flashy like the Lakers and Nuggets in the Western Conference, but play the type of basketball that wins in the postseason.  On top of that they still have one of the more dominant big men in the game in Duncan and an outstanding point guard in Parker. The Spurs will not only need the best out of Duncan and Parker, they   are going to need big time contributions from the veterans Michael Finley, Drew Gooden, and Kurt Thomas along with guys like Ime Udoka and Roger Mason Jr. Bet the Spurs +1000 to win the Western Conference Championship at Sportsbook.com

Why They Won’t Win It All: The loss of Ginobili is going to loom large for this team, as they just don’t have that deep of roster to make up for his 15.5 points per game. Not only will they miss his scoring, but they will miss so much else that Ginobili brings to the table. Another reason that you have to question the Spurs chances this postseason, is they are finally starting to show signs of aging, and it could just be this team has passed its prime. Now if this team was full strength there is no question they could get hot and give the Lakers and others all kinds of trouble, but the fact is they aren’t and you have to wonder if their old legs have one last push in them. The Spurs should get out of the first round with the homecourt advantage over the Mavs, but unless the Hornets upset the Nuggets I don’t see the Spurs making it past the 2nd round, and even then I don’t know if they have enough to beat the Hornets.
