2009 Stanford Football Predictions
Written June 27, 2009 by InfoPlays
Stanford is primed for its first bowl game since 2001 with a veteran team and a manageable schedule that features seven home games. But to win six games, the Cardinal needs steady play at quarterback and a running game that resembles last year’s success behind a reworked offensive line. Stanford is listed at +3300 to win the Pac-10 Conference according to the most up-to-date NCAA football odds.
Offense: It’s difficult to predict how effective the Stanford Cardinal offense will be this season, especially with the quarterback situation. But it’s now certain that star running back Toby Gerhart will be back with the team this fall after passing up on the MLB Draft in June. He gives the Cardinal a punishing runner who gained 1,136 yards and scored 15 touchdowns despite being the defensive priority against every opponent they faced. Redshirt freshman quarterback Andrew Luck ended spring ball with the lead on incumbent Tavita Pritchard, a role that likely won’t be official in training camp. Can Luck lead this team to six wins and a bowl bid? With Gerhart in the backfield, he won’t have to win games as much as avoid losing them.
The top pass catchers from ‘08 return. Doug Baldwin has the speed and big-play ability, while Ryan Whalen has the hands and route-running. Sophomore Chris Owusu might be the most gifted of the bunch. And then there’s Richard Sherman, who made that huge fourth-down catch in the upset of USC be he hasn’t done much since then except get hurt and spend a lot of time in Jim Harbaugh’s doghouse. Up front, Stanford has to replace a pair of All-League performers in center Alex Fletcher and tackle Ben Muth. The line has been shuffled to accomplish that, as everyone is either new to the lineup or switching positions. It could take a few games for the line to gel.

Defense: Stanford ranked in the middle of the Pac-10 in almost every defensive category last season. But their pass defense was No. 9, largely due to having just seven interceptions as a team. With questions at three of the four spots in the secondary, this will be the primary concern once again. Delano Howell is the projected starter at strong safety alongside veteran Bo McNally. Cornerback is the most problematic spot. They have to replace Wopamo Osaisai, and the Cardinal need consistency on the other side.
Stanford possesses one of the top pass rushers in the Pac-10. With Sione Fua, Matt Masifilo and Ekom Udofia, the Cardinal is in fine shape at tackle. Ends Tom Keiser , Erik Lorig and Tom McAndrew combined for 12 sacks and 18 tackles for loss last season. The linebacking unit has more holes than the line but fewer than in the secondary. Clinton Snyder have moved to middle linebacker after playing on the outside last season. On the weak side they’ll have to replace Pat Maynor and his 69 tackles from a year ago. If junior Chike Amajoyi can hold down the position, the unit should in in good shape without being spectacular.
