2009 Subway Fresh Fit 500 Predictions

Â
After a week off the NASCAR Sprint Cup series is back in action this week, as drivers gear up for the 2009 Subway Fresh Fit 500 at Phoenix International Speedway. The race is schedules for Saturday night, and it should be a packed house for the 8th race of the season. The story will be if Jeff Gordon can continue his remarkable start to the 2009 season, that included a win in the last Sprint Cup race back at the Samsung 500. For Gordon to win he will have to take care of Hendricks Motor Sports teammate Jimmie Johnson who is the defending champion of the race this weekend, but Gordon is no stranger to the winner circle at Phoenix, as his last win before the win a couple weeks ago came here at the Subway Fresh Fit 500 in 2007. With the race just a couple days away, here is a look at the 3 drivers I think have the best shot at winning the race this weekend.Â
Jimmie Johnson +450 odds to win at Sportsbook.com: Johnson is currently 2nd in the point standing right behind his teammate Gordon, and it seems like its about time Johnson takes home the checkered flag once again this year. Johnson won his first race of the 2009 season just a few weeks ago at the Goody’s Fast Pain Relief 500, and was 2nd in the last race at the Samsung 500. What really makes Johnson a threat this week, is how well he has done here at Phoenix of late. Johnson won both the starts here in 2008, and won another one back in the fall race here in 2007. Johnson hasn’t finished out of the top 5 at Phoenix since the final race here back in 2006. While I could have just as easily put Gordon here, I think that Johnson is the main man to beat this weekend.Â
Denny Hamlin +800 odds to win at Sportsbook.com: Hamlin sits in 6th place in the points standings early on in the 2009 season, and a big reason for that is how this guy has raced over the last 3 races. After failing to crack the top 10 in each of the first 4 races to start the season, Hamlin has answered with 3 straight top tens, including a 6th place finish in the last race at the Samsung 500. Hamlin has also faired pretty well here at Pheonix, finishing 5th or better in 4 of his last 5 starts, including 3 third place finishes. Hamlin has never won here at Phoenix, but I would not be surprised if Hamlin doesn’t take home the checkered flag in this one.Â
Kurt Busch +1200 odds to win at Sportsbook.com: Busch is an excellent sleepr this weekend, as he has great value here with odds well outside the range of the favorites like Johnson and others. Busch is 3rd in the point standings thanks to a great start to the 2009 season that includes a win at the Kobalt Tools 500. Busch has been up and down here at Phoenix, as he has 6 top 10 finishes, including a win back in 2005, and 7 finishes outside of the top 10, but only 4 in his last 10 starts here. If you want someone a little bit under the radar with a great chance to win this weekend, Kurt Busch is your guy.
