2009 Super Bowl Predictions

Written January 2, 2009 by Jack Jones

The NFL playoffs begin this weekend as the 12 remaining teams gun it out for a chance at glory. With eight teams in action on Wild Card weekend we figured we would break down which teams we think are going to come out of the AFC and NFC to square off in the 2009 Super Bowl. If you like doing any NFL betting on futures then here are the suggestions offered by Jack Jones.

AFC

I believe that the AFC is the deeper of the two conferences with more teams capable of winning. That should be pretty obvious when you think about the fact that the 11-5 New England Patriots weren’t even good enough to make it into the post-season. Everyone is talking about the two teams who earned first round byes in the Tennessee Titans and the Pittsburgh Steelers, but I think you also have to watch out for the Indianapolis Colts. This team got off to a rough start but finished their season on a strong note. It also appears that they are getting healthy at the right time which could spell trouble for their opponents. My gut instinct says to take them over the Chargers this weekend. I don’t think the Titans or the Steelers would want to see Peyton and company roll in to town, however, I think the Steelers have what it takes to win the AFC. This team has been playing well and has the best defense in the league. I don’t care if the Titans were resting players or not, getting blanked in your regular season finale is never a good thing. I also think Tennessee kind of skated by early in the year when they were underestimated and faltered a little bit when teams started taking them seriously.

Prediction: Pittsburgh Steelers win the AFC (+225 odds at BetUS)

NFC

The NFC isn’t nearly as deep and to me you have to only look at three teams to see who is going to come out: the New York Giants, the Carolina Panthers, and the Philadelphia Eagles. Yes, the Eagles, who were the last team to secure a spot in the playoffs are the team I suggest you watch out for. This squad has a great defense and a couple of weapons on offense that can do enough to give them a chance to win any game. I feel like Philadelphia will spell trouble for whoever plays them, but in the end, the defending champions from New York have just a little too much for any one to deny them a return trip to the Super Bowl and the Giants will end making the trip to Tampa.

Prediction: New York Giants win the NFC (+110 odds at BetUS)

What a great game this would be to see the Giants and the Steelers slug it out in the Super Bowl. You’d see a very close point spread and a game with two top five defenses that can get to the quarterback and wreak havoc. This year though it’s Pittsburgh who comes out on top and denies the Giants a repeat.

Super Bowl Champion: Pittsburgh Steelers (+550 at BetUS)

    Joel,

Not a bad choice by any means, however going into NY and beating the Giants is going to be tough for any team.

A bold pick: Atlanta vs Indy. With Indy winning another Super Bowl.

That is a bold pick. Both teams are going to have to win a few tough road games to reach the big game.

Good insight, however looking at Indy. I believe they have the best shot in the AFC. Like you said finishing strong and getting healthy now at the best possible time. P. Manning MVP for a reason I see their offense overpowering the Steelers, don’t get wrong it will be a close game.

I stand with the Giants in the NFC.

My pick Indy vs. NYG , Indy wins

    Indy 28 NYG 21

I like Indy a lot and it’s too bad they didn’t start the year off better so they could have gotten some games at home, but winning three road games in a rough is a tall order in the NFL playoffs. That’s the reason I went with the Steelers.

So much for ya’ll who picked Indy. Colts got punked out in the wildcard by an 8-8 squad. I tend to agree with the Pittsburgh pick. Steelers have overcome adversity all season with numerous key injuries and the toughest schedule in NFL history, still securing an impressive 12-4 record. Steelers / Giants match up makes sense but do not be shocked if the Eagles beat NY and make the big dance for a Pennsylvania Super Bowl with the Steelers avenging an early season loss. When in doubt go old school and go with the NFL’s top defense.

I think Jack is almost all correct. However, i think instead of the NYG winning the NFC, i think that the Panthers will make it to the super bowl. In that case, i think the Steelers will win this year simply for the fact that they have an under rated offense and had a #1 defense against the toughest schedule of the 2009 season. If not the Steelers then i’m going with Carolina.

    Steve,
I like your pick on the Steelers. My only beef with them is that they tend to be their own worst enemy. Namely, Big Ben goes on streaks where I think he tries to do too much and ends up turning the ball over. If he keeps his composure, this is the hardest team to beat in the NFL because of that ridiculous defense.

    Steve,

I agree. There are times when Big Ben holds the ball way to long, which cost him a lot of sacks and hits this year. Which also causes for a lot of injuries to Ben. If he gets rid of the ball quick, while realizing what the defense is doing, i think the Steelers will sweep right threw the playoffs and win there sixth super bowl win.
