2009 TCU Horned Frogs NCAA Football Predictions
Written July 24, 2009 by Jason Lowry
The TCU Horned Frogs put together another solid season in 2008, as they finished 2nd in MWC play at 7-1, and were equally impressive in non-conference play, as they finished the regular season 10-2. The Cougars added yet another win to the books, as they squeaked by Boise State 17-16 in the Poinsettia Bowl. This year the Horned Frogs will have to find a way to win with just 11 starters back from last season, but for a team that not had a losing season since 2004, I think its safe to say that head coach Gary Patterson will have this team ready to go in the fall.
The Horned Frogs bring the majority of the starters back on the offensive side of things, as six starters are back from the 2008 season. The Horned Frogsare expecting big things out of junior quarterback Andy Dalton, who might not have thrown for as many yards as he did as a freshman, but his touchdown to interception ratio went from 10-11 in 2007 to 11-5 in 2008. This year Dalton brings back his favorite target from last season in junior wideout Jimmy Young, who led Horned Frogs in 2008 with 59 catches for 988 yards and 5 scores. Also back in the starting lineup is receiver Bart Johnson, but the Horned Frogs are hoping that sophomore Antoine Hicks can make an impact this season. The Horned Frogs also have a pretty good tight end in junior Evan Frosch, and a solid pass catching back in senior Ryan Christian. In the running game the Horned Frogs have a powerful back in senior Joseph Turner, who led the team with 577 yards and 11 scores in 2008. Dalton is also a threat with his legs, as he was third on the team last year with 432 yards to go along with 8 rushing scores. The offensive line brings back both starting tackles, but must find three new faces to take over on the inside. It looks as though sophomore Kyle Dooley and junior Zach Roth will take over at the two guard spots, while junior Jake Kirkpatrick is expected to start at center. Overall this unit will depend greatly on Dalton and how much more progress he can make with another offseason to work on his game. Bet the Horned Frogs this season at Sportsbook.com.

On defense the Horned Frogs have just five starters back to a unit that allowed just 8.5 points per game in MWC play last season, and while the talent is there you have to think there will be a bit of a drop off on this side of the ball. The Horned Frogs return an absolute beast at defensive end in senior Jerry Hughes, who easily led the MWC with 15 sacks last season. While the Horned Frogs are looking to sophomore Braylon Broughton to come in and start opposite of Hughes, they really need a couple of juniors in Wayne Daniels and Kelly Griffin to come in and play well at defensive tackle. The Horned Frogs run a 4-2-5 defense, and while they return senior Daryl Washington at one of the linebacker spots, all the buzz is around freshman middle linebacker Tanner Brock, who figures to come right into the starting lineup and be a force for the Horned Frogs this season. The secondary remains pretty much intact with the return of two outstanding corners in seniors Rafael Priest and Nick Sanders and one of the best safeties in the conference in junior free safety Tejay Johnson. Another star looks to join this unit, as Oklahoma transfer Malcolm Williams is expected to come right in and start for the Horned Frogs. While this unit might not be as good as the 2008 squad, this should still be the best defense in the MWC this season. My 2009 Prediction: 2nd in MWC (7-1) Overall (10-2)
The Horned Frogs figure to be very good in 2009, but I have them just missing out on the conference title, as I have them losing on the road to BYU. The Horned Frogs will need to take care of business at home in games against UNLV and Utah and must win a tough one on the road against Air Force. The Horned Frogs have a couple of tough non-conference games against Virginia and Clemson, and while I think they can take care of Virginia, I don’t think they will be able to win on the road against Clemson.
