Tennessee Titans Mock Draft 2009
Written April 24, 2009 by Black Widow
The Titans were picked to finish in the bottom half of the AFC South last season, but after winning their first 10 games of the year, Tennessee cruised to the division title and top seed in the AFC playoffs. They managed this feat despite QB Vince Young losing his starting job after only one game. That shows how good of a coach Jeff Fisher really is, as he minimizes distractions, communicates with his players and gets his team focused. Music City Miracles has a 7 round mock draft for the Titans, and here are my top five holes for Tennessee to fill with their picks in this season’s draft:
1.) Wide Receiver - The Titans’ leading receiver, Brandon Jones, had only 41 catches in 2008. Jones was a free agent in the offseason and used it to move on to the 49ers for more money. Tennessee did pick up Nate Washington from Pittsburgh, but he’s never topped the 40-catch mark in his career. The Titans running game is the key to the offense, and Tennessee sets up their passing plays off of play-action. They need to stock their receiving corps with playmakers that can prevent defenses from stacking 8 in the box to stop RB’s Chris Johnson and LenDale White. They haven’t had a true No. 1 receiver since Derrick Mason back in the Steve McNair days. Good Fits in ‘09 Draft Class: WR Darrius Heyward-Bey (Maryland), WR Mohamed Massa quoi (Georgia), WR Mike Wallace (Ole Miss).
2.) Defensive Tackle - With DT Albert Haynseworth gone to the Redskins, the Defensive Tackle position is a must for the Titans in this year’s Draft. Tennessee did sign Jovan Haye from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to add some depth, but after a 68-tackle, 6-sack campaign in ‘07, Haye took a step backwards last year with only 33 tackles and 0 sacks. 2008 second-round pick Jason Jones made big strides last season, and Tony Brown has had his moments where he’s been productive for Tennessee. Good Fits in ‘09 Draft Class: DT Ron Brace (Boston College), DT Sen’Derrick Marks (Auburn), DT Demonte Bolden (Tennessee).
3.) Quarterback - The Titans signed QB Patrick Ramsey in free-agency, but he’ll never be more than a backup QB. Kerry Collins signed a 2-year deal so he’s clearly not the long-term solution, either. Last year’s No. 3 Chris Simms have left for Denver in free-agency. Who knows if Vince Young is mentally ready to return to the starting lineup. Good Fits in ‘09 Draft Class: QB Josh Freeman (Kansas State).
4.) Cornerback - Nick Harper is getting up in age, and reserve Chris Carr was a free agent in the offseason and moved on to Baltimore. If the Titans can find a cornerback in the mold of Carr, a young cover guy who can pitch in on special teams, they could strike to fill the position earlier than expected in the draft. You can never have enough cornerbacks in the AFC South. Good Fits in the ‘09 Draft Class: CB D.J. Moore (Vanderbilt), CB DeAngelo Smith (Cincinnati), CB Don Carey (Norfolk State).
5.) Center - There should be no complaints about Tennessee’s offensive line, especially the play of Pro Bowl C Kevin Mawae, but bolstering the depth and talent of the line’s interior should be something the Titans do at some point on Draft Day. Mawae suffered an elbow injury at the end of the season, and he’s getting up in age. The Titans should look for a young center who can also play guard and learn the ropes from Mawae and, in turn, push Leroy Harris for a starting job. Good Fits in ‘09 Draft Class: C-OG Alex Mack (California), OG Roger Allen (Missouri Western).
