2009 Tennessee Titans NFL Season Predictions
Written June 18, 2009 by Jason Lowry
The Tennessee Titans finished the regular season at 13-3 and earned the No.1 seed out of the AFC heading into the postseason, but all that meant nothing as the Titans suffered a heartbreaker in their first game against the Baltimore Ravens. The 10-13 loss on their home field to end the season had to leave a pretty sour taste for the players, and you have to think that this team will be even hungrier heading into the 2009 season.
The Titans offseason consisted of watching star defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth take the money and run to Washington, and a number of players who contributed last season hit the door, including wide receivers Brandon Jones and Justin McCareins along with corners Chris Carr, Eric King, and Reynaldo Hill. The Titans did add some pieces to the puzzle in free agency including the likes of wide receiver Nate Washington, defensive tackle Jovan Haye, and DeMarcus Faggins. The Titans also made some moves in the NFL draft, as they used their first round selection on Rutgers receiver Kenny Britt. The team also added some depth in the draft as they got a solid defensive tackle in Auburn’s Sen’Derrick Marks and a possible future star at tight end in South Carolina’s Jared Cook. The Titans feel like they are here to compete again in 2009, but it will be interesting to see how the defense responds after the loss of Haynesworth in the middle.

It is no secret what the Titans plan to do when they have the football, and thats run the football down your throat over and over. A big reason for the Titans huge success on the ground, was the addition of Chris Johnson, who ran for 1,228 yards and 9 scores in his rookie season. Johnson wasn’t the only one doing damage, as LenDale White powered his way to 15 touchdowns. The Titans spent a 5th round pick on Michigan State running back Javon Ringer, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he didn’t join in on the fun this season. At quarterback it looks as though the days of future first round pick Vince Young are all but over in Tennessee, as the Titans signed the veteran Kerry Collins to a 2 year extension this offseason. Young could still see action if Collins gets hurt, but if not we might not ever see Young on the field in a meaningful game again in a Titans uniform. The big question mark surrounding the offense is what kind of production will this unit get out of the receiving game. The best receiver the Titans have from last year’s team is Justin Gage, and he only got 34 passes last season. That means the Titans are putting a lot of hope into the newly acquired Nate Washington and the rookie Kenny Britt. The Titans aren’t going to throw the football often, but these guys have to preform or teams are going to load the box to stop the run. The Titans do have two solid options at tight end in Bo Scaife and the veteran Alge Crumpler, and both will need to have good years in 2009. The offensive line is the powerhouse of this unit, as they return all 5 starters to an offense that ran for 2,199 yards and allowed Collins to be sacked just 8 times all season. If the receivers produce this offense could really improve in 2009, but either way expect the running game to be just fine in 2009. Bet the Titans +300 to win the NFC North at Sportsbook.com.
There is no question that the Titans will feel the loss of Haynesworth on the defensive side of things, and it will be interesting to see just how much of an impact he really had on this unit. For now the Titans will stick with a number of different players to step in at the tackle spot to fill the void. Tony Brown returns in the middle and 2nd year tackle Jason Jones is the leading candidate to start along side him, but expect to see plenty of Jovan Haye, the rookie Marks, and Kevin Vickerson as well. At the two end spots the Titans will stick with Kyle Vanden Bosh and Javon Kearse, but expect to see plaenty of Jacob Ford as well at end, as he came in and had 7 sacks a year ago. At linebacker the Titans will keep the trio of Keith Bulluck, David Thornton, and Stephen Tulloch, but these three must stay healthy as the Titans are very then at this position. The secondary is loaded with talent, as cornerback Cortland Finnegan, free safety Michael Griffin, and strong safety Chris Hope all made it to the Pro Bowl in 2008, and the corner Nick Harper is still a pretty good option even at the age of 34. If the team goes out there and still dominates opposing offenses than the Titans are a Super Bowl contender, but if the defense struggles to get it going, the Titans could be come very mediocre in a hurry. My Prediction 2nd in AFC South(10-6) I am going to give this team the benefit of the doubt after their incredible run in 2009, but I will admit I have my worries about this team on both sides of the ball. If they don’t find someone to catch the football and the defense shows it really misses Haynesworth’s I think this team could miss out on the playoffs. Right now I have them sneaking in as a wild card, but if they slip up look out for the Texans or Dolphins to take their spot.
