2009 Troy Trojans NCAA Football Predictions

Written June 30, 2009 by Jason Lowry

Troy Trojans 2009 PredictionsThe Troy Trojans come into the 2009 season with some very high expectations, after another solid season that landed them the Sun Belt Conference title. Troy finished the regular season at 8-4 with a very solid 6-1 record in conference play, and were rewarded with a trip to the New Orleans Bowl against Southern Miss. The Trojans wound up losing a heartbreaker to Southern Miss 30-27 in overtime. The Trojans come into 2009 with just 12 returning starters, but like usual are loaded with talent and should have no problem putting together another solid year under head coach Larry Blakeney.

On offense the Trojans return 7 starters, but most importantly have some experience returning at the quarterback spot in senior Levi Brown, who ended up being a great addition to this team after transferring from Richmond. In 10 games Brown threw for 2,020 yards with 15 touchdowns to just 3 interceptions. The running game should be pretty solid in 2009, as junior DuJuan Harris returns from an outstanding sophomore season where he ran for 1,077 yards and 11 touchdowns. The Trojans also have a number of talented backs that could see some action including senior Maurice Greer and freshmen D.J. Taylor and Greg Pratt. At wide receiver the Trojans have just two returning starters, but still have some very good talent, including 2008 leading receiver Jerrel Jernigan, who caught 77 passes for 868 yards and 5 touchdowns. Cornelius Williams is the other returning starter, but fellow seniors Andrew Davis and Zack Marcum have also seen some playing time and should be part of the mix. The guy that could really make an impact on the offensive side of things is redshirt freshman Josh Jarboe, who transfered to Troy from Oklahoma. The offensive line will have to replace both starting tackles, and for a team that likes to throw the ball as much as the Trojans do this could be a problem. Sophomore James Brown and junior Tyler Graves will fight for the left tackle spot, but it looks as though the early edge will go to Brown. At right tackle the team looks set on senior Nic Riley. The inside of the line should have no problems with the return of left guard Tyler Clark, center Danny Franks and right guard Steven Adams. The offense ranked 2nd with 36 points a game in 2008, and I feel like they could be even better than that mark in 2009. Bet the Trojans this season at Sportsbook.com

As good as the offense looks heading into the 2009 season, the defensive unit looks even better. While this side of the ball returns just 5 starters from 2008, all 5 have 1st team capabilities, and should make everyone else around them that much better. The Trojans will return a pretty potent defensive end duo in seniors Brandon Lang and Cameron Sheffield. The two combined for 16 sacks last season, with Lang leading the way with 10.5. The Trojans look like they are set to plug in senior Kevin Dixon and junior Eugene Kinlaw at the two defensive tackle spots, but there are a number of guys who could step in and play if needed, including senior Rashad Roussell, junior Emanuel Dudley, and redshirt freshman James Searcy. At linebacker the Trojans have two of the best the conference has to offer in seniors Borris Lee and Bear Woods. Senior David McDowell is expected to start at strong side backer, and should fit in very well with this bunch. The secondary has some concerns with senior cornerback Jorrick Calvin being the only starter returning. It looks as though freshman Bryan Willis has the inside track at the other corner spot, while seniors Courtland Fuller and Chris Bowens take over at the two vacated safety spots. With only 5 starters back you would usually worry about a team, but when you can plug in juniors and seniors that know the system it really makes things easy. The Trojans are expect to have 9 senior starters on defense, and that usually is a good formula for success, especially in a smaller conference like the Sun Belt. My 2009 Prediction: 1st in Sun Belt Conference. The Trojans have the making of a very good football team, and should finish the regular season right around 10 wins this season. I think its pretty safe to say the perfect season will come to an end early with their road game against defending national champion Florida in week 2. The rest of the Trojans schedule is pretty easy, but they will have a couple testers on the road in a non-conference game against Arkansas and the season finale against 2008 Sun Belt runner-up Louisiana.
