2009 Tulane Green Wave NCAA Football Predictions
Written July 16, 2009 by Jason Lowry
The Tulane Green Wave are coming off a very disappointing season where they finished just 2-10 overall and barely finished out of last place in the West division of Conference USA at 1-7. The Green Wave could actually be a better team in 2009 with just 13 returning starters, but will have a hard time showing that record wise, as the majority of their winnable games come on the road.
On offense the Green Wave have seven starters back, including senior running back Andre Anderson and senior wide out Jeremy Williams, who were lost for most of last season with injuries. The Green Wave also bring back sophomore quarterback Joe Kemp, but Kemp will have to show a lot of improvement this season, as he threw for 2,194 yards with just 8 touchdowns to 13 interceptions. Kemp’s numbers should improve if Williams stays healthy all season, as he had 27 catches for 437 yards and 5 touchdowns in just 5 games. The Green Wave also hope to get some much needed production out of junior Allen, Mitchell, freshman DJ Banks, and junior tight end Cody Sparks. There was no question that the offense struggled without Anderson in the mix at the end of last season, as Anderson played in just 6 games last season, and was still the leading rusher with 864 yards and 7 touchdowns, and should come close to running for 1,500 yards and 15 touchdowns this season. The offensive line must replace both starting spots on the right side, but look to add some veteran talent there in seniors Nick Landry and Tyler Rice. If Kemp improves as the Green Wave are expecting and they don’t lost anymore key players to injury, this offense should make a huge improvement this season. The Green Wave have six starters back on defense this season, and are hoping that this unit can find a way to improve on the 38 points it gave up per game last season. The Green Wave have a couple of very good players up front in senior defensive end Logan Kelley, who had a team high 7 sacks last season and senior defensive tackle Reggie Scott. Another senior in Adam Kewentua will start opposite of Logan at defensive end, while junior Oscar Ponce de Leon tries to improve at defensive tackle. There will be three new faces in the starting lineup at linebacker, as seniors David Kirksey and Travis Burks are expected to team up with sophomore Kristofar Rhymes. All three got on the field last season, but this group has to play at a very high level if this defense wants any chances of improving off last years numbers. The Green Wave have three of the four starters back in the secondary, and heading into the fall it looks as though junior Phillip Davis will get the nod to start opposite of senior Charles Harris at corner. At safety seniors Chinonso Echebelem and Corey Sonnier are back, and the team is hoping that Sonnier won’t have to lead the team in tackles again this season. The Green Wave were absolutely horrible against the run last year giving up an average of 242 yards a game, and if that numbers doesn’t drastically drop this team is headed straight for the bottom of the West Division. My 2009 Prediction: 6th in Conference USA West Division. I think there will be some improvements on offense and the defense should be better against the run, but the Green Wave will likely struggle to win a game this season in conference play. The three teams I feel the Green Wave have the best shot at beating are in the final three games of the season against Rice, UCF, and SMU, but all three are on the road.
