2009 Tulsa Golden Hurricane NCAA Football Predictions
Written July 15, 2009 by Jason Lowry
The Tulsa Golden Hurricane had an outstanding season in 2008, as they finished up the season at a very respectable 11-3. The Golden Hurricane finished tied for 1st with Rice in the West Division of Conference USA, but earned the spot in the title game thanks to a win earlier in the year over the Owls. The Golden Hurricane ended up getting upset in the title game against East Carolina, but were able to rally with a win in their fourth consecutive bowl game against Ball State in the GMAC Bowl. This year the Golden Hurricane will have to replace their top passer, wide out, and running back from last season, but do have eight starters back on the defensive side of things.
Overall the Golden Hurricane have just 5 starters back on offense, and how well this team does will largely depend on how quick junior quarterback Jacob Bower learns the rope as a starter. Bower was very efficient when he got a chance to throw the football last season, as he completed 11 of 15 passes with 1 touchdown and 1 interception. The Hurricane lost their top back in Tarrion Adams, but look like they have a very good replacement in junior Jamad Williams, who ran it 86 times for 523 yards and 3 scores in a back up role last season. The team also has fullback Charles Clay, who had 2 rushing touchdowns and a very impressive 9 receiving touchdowns last season out of the backfield. The Golden Hurricane may have lost their top receiver from last season, but return three very good players. The best of the bunch is sophomore Damaris Johnson, who had 743 yards and a team high 10 receiving touchdowns last season. Also in the mix are senior Slick Shelley and junior Trae Johnson. The offensive line needs to replace three starters from last season, as they only two starters back are sophomore left tackle Tyler Holmes and senior right guard Curt Puckett. While there is no doubting the talents of the two guys back, the Golden Hurricane will need a lot out of sophomore right tackle Eric Sproal, junior center Jon Bell, and sophomore left guard Clint Anderson. If the newcomers on the line can come in and play at a high level, the Golden Hurricane should fighting for a conference championship again this season. On defense the Golden Hurricane have a bunch of talent back, but have to replace both defensive ends in their 3-4 scheme. It looks as though senior Un’Tavious Scott and junior Odrick Ray will step into the starting role, and Scott was impressive with 4 sacks last season in a backup role. The team does return a force in the middle in senior nose guard Wilson Garrison, who should be a 2nd/3rd team all-conference player. At linebacker the Golden Hurricane have all four starters back, including one of the best linebackers in Conference USA in senior middle linebacker Mike Bryan, who had a team high 119 tackles and 10.5 tackles for a loss last season. Also keep an eye out for senior James Lockett, who had a team high 8.5 sacks and was second to Bryan in tackles with 82. In the secondary its expected that sophomore DeAundre Brown takes over at the open safety spot, and this is a kid that started in 6 games last season. Another very good player on this defense is senior corner Kenny Sims, who led the Golden Hurricane with 8 pass breakups last season. Overall I think this defense is going to be very good and could be the reason that this team repeats as the West Division champs. Bet Conference USA this season at Sportsbook.com.
My 2009 Prediction: 1st in Conference USA West Division. I think that the Golden Hurricane will earn their 3rd straight West Division title this season, but I don’t think they will have what it takes to win the overall title, as I have them losing to Southern Miss in the regular season and in the conference title game.
