2009 UAB College Football Predictions
Written July 13, 2009 by InfoPlays
It took the UAB Blazers a little while to get going last season after a 1-6 start, but a 3-2 finish shows this squad is heading in the right direction. UAB is nearly up to the full scholarship limit of 85 heading into year three of coach Neil Callaway’s rebuilding process. With QB Joe Webb and a deep set of skill players, the Blazers will have enough offense to score with anyone in the league. If the Blazers’ defense can step up, UAB could be in line for their first bowl bid since 2004. College football lines are available for your wagering. Offense: Joe Webb is a freakish athlete at quarterback, but he must cut back on turnovers. Webb set the single-season C-USA rushing record by running for 1,021 yards a year ago. He accounted for 3,388 total yards and 21 touchdowns, but his 16 interceptions were the third-highest total in the conference. The senior certainly showed signs of growth in the spring, completing 21 of 29 passes for 283 yards and three touchdowns without an interception in the final scrimmage. Running back Rashaud Slaughter and receiver Frantrell Forrest offer two playmakers for Webb to get the ball to.
Slaughter rushed for 514 yards and five scores last year while ranking second on the team in receptions with 29. Forrest ranked fifth in the conference in all-purpose yards in 2008. He was one of nine UAB receivers to grab at least 10 balls from Webb last year, which speaks to the depth and talent at the position. Senior center Jake Seitz and junior right tackle Terence Edge are the standouts on a deep Blazers’ offensive line.

Defense: UAB finished 106th nationally in total defense a year ago, but they showed signs of turning the corner in their final three games. In the first nine contests the Blazers allowed 37.1 points/game, but just 13.7 points/game against their final three opponents. Seven starters return to this unit, but the area of concern is a lack of numbers at linebacker and safety. The team lost its top three tacklers and four starters at these positions. Callaway feels his incoming recruits will help out at both spots. The team strength here will be on the defensive line, where ends Bryant Turner and Anthony Barnes return along with juniors D.J. Reese and Tim Davis. Davis played tackle last year, but he’s been moved to end in spring ball to make room for senior nose tackle David DeCordova.
The one to watch at linebacker will be freshman Daniel White, a January enrollee who was listed as the starter in the middle after the spring. Three starters must be replaced in the secondary, including All-C-USA cornerback Kevin Sanders. Senior Brandon Carlisle is the leader of this group at cornerback, and sophomore Terrell Springs started the team’s final six games. Chase Daniel tied for third on the team in tackles last season, and he’ll man the starting strong safety spot this fall. Junior college transfer Hiram Atwater and junior college signee Elliot McGaskin will each compete for the starting free safety spot.
