2009 UCF College Football Predictions

Written July 7, 2009 by InfoPlays

2009 UCF College Football PredictionsIt has been an up-and-down tenure for UCF Knights coach George O’Leary in his five years on the job. In even-numbered years under O’Leary, UCF is just 8-27. But in odd-numbered years, the Knights are 18-9 and have played in a pair of bowl games. The offensive weapons are there to get the Knights back to the postseason in 2009, but the secondary must hold up in this pass-happy conference to make the defense work. College football odds are available at Sportsbook.com where they offer reduced juice on Friday to give you an edge!

Offense: 10 starters return on offense, but a newcomer might make the biggest difference. Coordinator Charlie Taaffe inherits an offense that ranked dead last in the country last season, rushing for just 113.3 yards/game and passing for 116.3 yards/game. Taffle will bring a spread attack to the offense with intentions on getting the ball down the field more in the passing game. Sophomore QB Rob Calabrese responded well to the challenge in the spring. A deep receiving corps will make the spread work at UCF with the top three pass catchers back from last year’s squad. They are Brian Watters, Kamar Aiken and Khymest Williams. But it doesn’t stop there. Redshirt freshman Marquee Williams and two veterans returning from injury in A.J. Guyton and Rocky Ross should figure into the starting rotation before season’s end.

Tight end Corey Rabazinski returns from a leg injury that cost him half of the 2008 seasons. There is depth here as well with John Lubischer and Ricky Kay, along with Adam Nissley who had six starts at tackle and six at tight end last season. The line had four returning starters last year, and that experience should pay major dividends in 2009. New offensive line coach Brent Key has moved Nick Pieschel from guard to the all-important left tackle position after Pieschel started 7 games last year. A potential interesting QB situation may arrive in the fall. Former Wake Forest backup Brett Hodges said he would transfer to UCF to take advantage of the NCAA rule that allows graduate students to play immediately at another school if the field of interest isn’t offered at their present school.

Defense: The front seven is perhaps the best in the C-USA. There are six returning starters here, including tackles Travis Timmons and Torrell Troup. At linebacker there’s Lawrence Young and Chance Henderson, with ends Bruce Miller, David Williams and Jarvis Geathers all starting at least six games each in 2008. Along with Young and Henderson at backer, there’s depth with veterans Cory Hogue and Jordan Richards both returning from injury. UCF has so much confidence in their linebacking corps that they are moving junior Derrick Hallman, who started there last year, to free safety.

There is a more pressing reason for the move. The Knights lose all four starters in the secondary. The four that graduated combined for 183 starts and 50 interceptions in their careers. Some of the potential replacements saw minimal playing time last year, so they won’t be completely new to the ball game. But potentially losing cornerback Emery Allen after injuring his leg in the spring won’t help matters.
