2009 UConn College Football Predictions

Written June 29, 2009 by InfoPlays

UConn Football Predictions 2009How quickly will a new quarterback emerge to run UConn’s new hurry-up offense? They will also need to find a workhorse ad running back to pick up where Donald Brown left off. The biggest issue might be the schedule. The Huskies face UNC, Baylor and Notre Dame in the non-conference portion, and then they face Pit, WVU and Cincinnati on the road. With that said, it appears that a .500 finish would be a success in 2009. College football odds show the Huskies listed at +800 to win the Big East Conference.

Offense: The hiring of Joe Moorhead as offensive coordinator gives hope to an offensive unit that lost the nation’s leading rusher and a quarterback whose gritty style symbolized the Huskies. The new hurry-up offense should help offset the losses of Donald Brown, a first-team All-American after rushing for 2,083 yards, and QB Tyler Lorenzen. Even with those two, the offense was very predictable week in and week out. It won’t be now with Moorhead calling the shots. Now he has to decide if Zach Frazer or Cody Endres, who each played significant time under center last season, is better at operating the fast-paced approach.

All-Big East left tackle William Beatty and center Keith Gray are gone from the offensive line, but three starters return. Promising sophomore Moe Petrus shifts from guard to center where he is better suited. Senior Andre Dixon, a second-team All-Big East selection in 2007 after rushing for 929 yards, could be the answer at tailback. Jordan Todman will get his chance after serving as Brown’s backup in 2008. Sophomore Kashif Moore, the team’s leading receiver last season with 27 grabs, and Brad Kanuch give the Huskies two promising wide receivers in the new attack. Tight end is still a concern, with redshirt freshmen Ryan Griffin and John Delahunt getting their chance.

Defense: When talking about the country’s best linebacker crews, the UConn Huskies are certainly worth a mention. A trio of juniors in Scott Lutrus, Lawrence Wilson and Greg Lloyd return to dominate. MLB Lutrus was third in the Big East in tackles last season with 106. There are plenty of holes to fill elsewhere on the defense after ranking No. 6 in the nation last fall. Sophomore tackle Twyon Martin is the only returnee in the front four, an area that has been a strength for the Huskies in recent years. Lindsey Witten and Marcus Campbell are expected to man the end positions after taking over for Cody Brown and Julius Williams, who combined for 17 sacks last year.

The secondary should be solid despite the loss of corner Darius Butler, a second-round NFL Draft selection. Jasper Howard is back at one of the corners after starting all 13 games last season, and Robert Vaughn returns at one safety. Beyond the starters, the secondary is very thin. All the backups are either redshirt freshmen or sophomores. UConn heads into the season with just three seniors, Vaughn, Witten and cornerback Robert McClain, as projected starters. So players will have to grow up in a hurry if the Huskies are to be competitive in the Big East again.
