2009 ULM Warhawks NCAA Football Predictions

Written June 30, 2009 by Jason Lowry

ULM Warhawks 2009 PredictionsIt was a disappointing 2008 season for the University of Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks, as they finished the season at 4-8 and just 3-4 in Sun Belt Conference play. But there was some reason for optimism in 2009, as the Warhawks were the only team to defeat Troy in conference play, and all four losses in conference play were by less than 10 points, including a 1 point loss to Florida Atlantic at home and a 3 point loss on the road at Middle Tennessee. The Warhawks are hoping that with 17 returning starters they can not only finish above .500 this season, but take the school to its first ever bowl game.

On offense the Warhawks have 8 returning starters, but will have to find a new man to hold down the quarterback spot, The team is hoping that either junior Trey Revell or SMU transfer Zach Rhodes will be able to come and and hold down the open position. Revell saw limited action in 2008, but wasn’t all that impressive completing 50% of his passes for 129 yards with 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions. While Revell has the experience Rhodes could be better of the two. EIther way whoever wins the starting job just needs to make good decisions and keep from turning the football over. The reason for that is the Warhawks should be able to run the football with a very experienced offensive line and their top two running backs back from last season in juniors Frank Goodin and Rodney Lovett. While Lovett ran for just 183 yards and a touchdown last year, Goodin figures to be one of the top backs in the conference after rushing for 783 yards and 5 scores as a sophomore. At wide receiver the Warhawks lost their 2nd best receiver from 2008 in Zeek Zacharie, but return top receiver in senior Darrell McNeal who led the team with 51 catches for 558 yards and 4 scores, but the guy to watch out for is sophomore Anthony McCall, who had 28 catches for 406 yards and a team best 6 receiving touchdowns. If the Warhawks can get solid play out of the quarterback spot, this could be the surprise team of the Sun Belt conference, as they have a very good defense coming back in 2009. The defense should be locked and loaded this season, as the Warhawks return 9 starters on this side of the ball. The Warhawks will run the 3-3-5 defense to try and get the very best out of the players they have on this side of the field. Up front the Warhawks have two of the top defensive linemen in the conference in senior nose tackle Aaron Williams and senior defensive end Aaron Morgan. The weakest part of this bunch comes at linebacker, but its not as if this unit is all that bad, as they have two outstanding talents in seniors Cardia Jackson and Josh Thomas, and the team is expected to plug in junior Theo Smith at the open outside backer spot, who had 49 tackles, including 5 for a loss in 2008. The Warhawks are stocked with great talent in their secondary, as they have the best safety duo in the conference in Josh Thompson and Greg James, and thats not even mention the very gifted junior Troy Giddens. At the corner the team returns both starters from last year in sophomore Nate Brown and senior Otis Stamps, and Brown looks like a future star at his position in this conference. Senior James Truxillo is expected to start at the 5th secondary spot, or what the Warhawks like to call the hawk position. This could wind up being the top defense in the Sun Belt this year, and could very well be the reason this team finishes above .500 this season. Bet the Sun Belt Conference this season at Sportsbook.com.

My 2009 Prediction: Tie for 3rd in Sun Belt Conference. I have the Warhawks finishing right in the think of things this season, as I have them finishing just behind Troy and Arkansas State with Middle Tennessee and Florida Atlantic. This team could come out of nowhere and win this conference, but that will depend on how well the offense gets rolling with a new quarterback.
