2009 Valero Texas Open Predictions
Written May 12, 2009 by Jason Lowry
This Saturday the PGA Tour gets ready for an exciting weekend at La Cantera Golf Club, as some of the best golfers in the world get ready to tee it up at the 2009 Valero Texas Open. Now the field isn’t loaded with the big names of Tiger Woods or Phil Mickelson, but there are still plenty of good golfers ready to fight for the win this weekend. The key to success at La Cantera is making birdies, and making lots of them, as the average winning score on this course has been around 18 under since 1995. Zach Johnson will not only look to keep a strong start to the 2009 season going, but defend his title at Valero as well. With guys like Johnson and Justin Leonard winning the last two years, it shows that being long off the tee is not the biggest need this weekend and accuracy is a good recipe for success. With that said here is a look at the 3 golfers I think have a real good shot at winning this weekend.
Zach Johnson +1200 to win at Sportsbook.com: Johnson comes in 6th in the FedEx Cup point standings, and could jump all the way to the top with a win this weekend. Johnson has 1 win this season at the Sony Open, and two other top 10 finishes. Johnson games seems perfect for this course, and who can argue that, as this guy comes in 13th in driving accuracy, 27th in greens in regulation, and a solid 41st in putting average. The reason I like Johnson is just the fact that he knows how to go after this course and go low, as he shot a solid 19 under last year to win this event by 2 shots. Look for Johnson to be right in the thick of things when the final round comes around this Sunday afternoon.
Tim Clark +1500 to win at Sportsbook.com: Clark has yet to win on the PGA Tour, but his day is coming, and it could be this weekend. Clark finished tied for 9th last week at the Players Championship, and that was the 5th time he as finished better than 13th this season. Just like Johnson, Clark’s game fits really well here at La Cantera, as he comes in 6th in driving accuracy, 6th in putting average, and 23rd in greens in regulation. When you hit the ball as well as this guy does its only a matter of time before you get a win. With the so many of the big names not in action this week, I feel like Clark has as good as shot as anybody to take home the trophy.
Daniel Chopra +4000 to win at Sportsbook.com: Chopra is my sleeper pick to win this weekend, as I feel like this guy is ready to break out with another big win on tour. Chopra was pretty solid last week at the Players Championship, and after a pretty rough start to the season this guy seems to have it going again. Another reason to like Chopra this weekend, is he has played well at La Centra before, as he finished tied for 3rd in his last start here back in 2007. So if you are looking for a solid sleeper pick this weekend, I think Chopra is just the guy you are looking for.
