2009 WAC Football Predictions

Written July 15, 2009 by InfoPlays

2009 WAC Football PredictionsBoise State has won six of the last seven WAC championships, with Hawaii’s miracle run in 2007 the only blemish against the Broncos. Last year, a loaded Fresno State team with a perfect BCS schedule fell flat on their faces, allowing Boise to ascend to the throne, missing another perfect season by a single point in a bowl loss to TCU. This year, Boise State’s biggest combatants will be up-and-coming Nevada and Louisiana Tech programs, but betting against the Broncos and fourth-year head coach Chris Petersen isn’t a good idea.  Sign up at Sportsbook.com and check out their college football lines where you will find the odds that the Boise State Broncos win the National Championship this season!

WAC Predictions:

1.) Boise State Broncos – They have won six of the past seven WAC titles, and nobody beats ‘em on the Blue Turf. The problem with having lots of good players is that they eventually have to leave. A tougher-than-usual schedule makes a perfect run unlikely, but not impossible.

2.) Nevada Wolf Pack – Chris Ault’s pistol offense has the perfect QB at the helm in Colin Kaepernick. Too often this team gets upset, like their loss to New Mexico State last year. If they can navigate the WAC without incident, a Nov. 22 game at BSU could be fun.

3.) Louisiana Tech Bulldogs – With Daniel Porter running behind five returning linemen, the Bulldogs are worthy contenders. The offense could use a little big-play capability to keep from being one-dimensional, though. They’re dangerous, but games at Fresno State and Nevada might make this prediction too high.

4.) Fresno State Bulldogs – Pat Hill, who is often in demand from other schools, is back coaching in the Valley. As beloved as Hill is, the FSU faithful is getting tired of not winning in the WAC. That losing will continue this season unless the Bulldogs far exceed expectations.

5.) Hawaii Warriors – The Warriors return nine starters a year after starting from scratch and managing to reach a bowl bid. This time the defense will take the hit with only two starters back from a tough unit. The Warriors are still in transition as they try to redefine the run-and-shoot approach.

6.) San Jose State Spartans – Dick Tomey has taken a perennial cellar-dweller and made it competitive. No matter how much progress is made, mistakes continue keeping them down. The coaching staff has enough talent on both sides of the ball to be competitive again in ‘09.

7.) New Mexico State Aggies – Luring DeWayne Walker from UCLA was an impressive coaching upgrade. Replacing longtime QB Chase Holbrook and a pair of playmakers on offense could be daunting. In hiring Walker, the Aggies get an “A” for aspiration. Keep an eye on Las Cruces.

8.) Utah State Aggies – Nineteen starters return, including 10 on a steadily improving defense. Gary Andersen might be great, but it’s another coaching transition in Logan. There’s reason to think they could be much better, but a history and a tough schedule says it’s just not going to happen.

9.) Idaho Vandals – Third-year coach Robb Akey has stabilized a program that was an ungodly mess before. Anybody who thinks three years is long enough to rebuild this thing is wrong. It’s going to take at least five. The Vandals will be better, but a sixth-place finish would represent a major success.
