2009 Washington Redskins Schedule
Written May 13, 2009 by Jack Jones
The Washington Redskins finished at 8-8 last season, but where 1-4 in their last five games. This team plays in the toughest divisions in football, so it will be interesting to see if they can get over the hump in 2009 and get back into the playoffs like they did when they went 9-7 in 2007. With the NFL projected win totals posted by the odds makers, it appears they expect another 8-8 season out of Washington this year. Let’s take a look at their game by game schedule and see where they think the wins and losses will come from. Also, if you are going to do any NFL betting this season, then make sure you check out the $500 match bonus that BetUS offers our readers!
The Washington Redskins preseason schedule kicks off on August 13th when the team travels to Baltimore to take on the Ravens. The first home game is August 22nd against the Pittsburgh Steelers followed by another home contest against the New England Patriots. The final game of the preseason takes place on September 3rd when the Redskins go to Jacksonville and take on the Jags. If you are looking to buy Washington Redskins tickets this year then stop by StubHub to get your seats!
Week 1 – Sunday, September 13th at the New York Giants -Heading to the Giants is going to be tough for anyone this year, so I expect an opening week loss.
Week 2 – Sunday, September 20th at home against the St. Louis Rams -Getting the Rams at home should amount to an easy win for the Redskins.
Week 3 – Sunday September 27th at the Detroit Lions -If the odds makers project this team at 8-8, road wins will be tough to come by, but this is the exception.
Week 4 – Sunday, October 4th at home against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers -The Bucs will be down slightly this year so you have to go with the home team.
Week 5 – Sunday, October 11th at the Carolina Panthers -Not a game I see Washington being favored in, so project a loss here.
Week 6 – Sunday, October 18th at home against the Kansas City Chiefs -The Chiefs should be better this year, but not good enough to go into Washington and pick up the win.
Week 7 – Monday, October 26th at home against the Philadelphia Eagles – This will be a tough battle, but the Redskins should prevail.
Week 9 – Sunday, November 8th at the Atlanta Falcons – Going on the road and taking on a potential playoff team means a likely loss here.
Week 10 – Sunday, November 15th at home against the Denver Broncos – I see Washington being a solid home team this year which means they’ll be favored to win this game.
Week 11 – Sunday, November 22nd at the Dallas Cowboys – Not many teams will head to Big D and pick up a win this year, so a likely loss for the Skins.
Week 12 – Sunday, November 29th at the Philadelphia Eagles – Road wins and the NFC East are a tough mix, so I don’t see it happening here.
Week 13 – Sunday, December 6th at home against the New Orleans Saints – Another game that the point spread will be close on, but I’ll ride Washington.
Week 14 – Sunday, December 13th at the Oakland Raiders -Things get interesting at this point. I think Oakland will be better but give the edge to Washington.
Week 15 – Monday, December 21st at home against the NY Giants – National audience on Monday night, but will be taking on one of the better teams in the league. Close loss here.
Week 16 – Sunday, December 27th at home against the Dallas Cowboys -With two road wins and only one home loss so far, I am forced to go with the Cowboys here by a hair.
Week 17 – Sunday, January 3rd at the San Diego Chargers – The Chargers are a top notch team in the AFC and won’t let this one slip away unless they are resting starters.
From the looks of the schedule I kind of like Washington to go OVER the eight wins this year. If you want NFL expert picks each week though you will have a better shot at winning money. Our handicappers break down the NFL point spreads on a weekly basis and that is why their NFL football picks hit at such a high rate.

Got something to say?

It looks like you have the Redskins going 1 and 5 in the NFC East this year. I agree that the NFC East is the best division in football, but I’d put the likely worst-case scenario at 2 and 4. It is more likely that the Redskins do no worse than 3 and 3 in the NFC East this year. Clearly, the Redskins are as much a Super Bowl contender as the other three teams in the division.
The Redskins are more experienced in the system and, other than possibly strong-side linebacker, the Redskins are at least as well off at every position as they were going into 2008. Even strong-side linebacker seems to be in capable hands with a rotation of solid veterans.
The defensive backfield is in far better shape this year, having both more youth and experience across the board than the 2008 version. The defensive line has younger pass-rushers starting at 2 of the 4 positions, to go with a veteran core of run stuffers. Samuels has shown no signs of age; Dockery is a huge step up from Kendall in the run game with no drop off in the pass game; Rabach is in his prime; Rinehart looks physically able to step in for Thomas, if Thomas still hasn’t returned to form; Jansen should be a lot healthier 2 years removed from injury and he’s in the best shape of his career, but the Redskins have plenty of other RT options now, with Heyer looking way more polished and physically fit than he did going into the last two seasons. Cooley, Moss, and Randel El are still in their primes, while Thomas, Davis, and Kelly are now NFL acclimated with nothing but upside. Portis is still one of the best and Betts is probably about as good with his fresher legs. The QBs are all in good health and now have a year in the system. Zorn has a clue about defense now. The rest of the coaching staff is probably still the best in football.
