2009 Western Michigan Broncos NCAA Football Predictions
Written July 2, 2009 by Jason Lowry
The Western Michigan Broncos had a pretty solid 2008 season, as they finished up the year at 9-4, including a solid 6-2 record in the Mid-American Conference. The Broncos earned just their fourth ever bowl game appearance last year, but were unable to come away with the schools first ever win in postseason play, as the Broncos fell to Rice 14-38. This year the Broncos return just 10 starters, which is tied for the fewest out of any team in the MAC this season, but there are still thoughts of MAC West title under head coach Bill Cubit.
A big reason that the Broncos have plenty of optimism heading into the 2009 season, is one of their seven returning starters on offense is senior quarterback Tim Hiller, who is one of the top passers in all of college football. One concern is Hiller has lost too much at the receiver position, as 3 of the top 4 receivers from 2008 are no longer with the team, including Jamarko Simmons, who led the team with 104 catches for 1,276 yards and 7 scores. The leading receiver coming back for the 2009 season is junior Juan Nunez, who had a pretty respectable season with 57 catches for 701 yards and 7 touchdowns. Two youngsters will try and pick up the slack in freshman Ansel Ponder and sophomore Robert Arnheim. Another solid option Hiller has is senior tight end Matt Stevens, who could put up some big numbers this season as the full time starter. At running back the Broncos have one of the top backs in the MAC this season, as senior Brandon West tries to build off his 1,026 yards and 8 touchdowns from a year ago. Another reason to like the offense is they return all but one linemen from last year, and they have some great talent coming back in sophomore left tackle Anthony Parker and junior guards Nick Clemens and Phillip Swanson. Another freshman will try to make his mark on this line in Ben Samson, who is expected to take over at right tackle. I think Hiller makes fans forget about all the losses at quarterback in a hurry, as I feel this makes his receivers look that much better. I expect this offense to carry this team while the defense rebuilds. Bet the Broncos this season at Sportsbook.com.

The Broncos return just three starters on defense this season, but the hope is that young talent coming in is going to really add some toughness, and this unit could end up being better than it was in 2008. A couple of those young talents include redshirt freshman Freddie Bishop and sophomore Drew Nowak. Bishop is expect to jump right in and play opposite of senior Justin Braska at defensive end, while Nowak will team up with senior Cody Cielenski at the tackle position. The Broncos return most of their talent at linebacker, as two of the three starters are back, including highly rated outside linebacker Austin Pritchard, who had an amazing 10.5 tackles for a loss last season. After seeing limited time in 2008 junior Harrison Porter will jump into the starting lineup and take over opposite of Pritchard. The secondary has to be the biggest concern for the Broncos this season, as they have to replace all four starters from last season. Juniors Mario Armstrong and Doug Wiggins are expected to take over at the two safety spots, and I think these two could end up surprising teams with their play. Where I worry about this unit is at corner, where sophomore Davis Lewis and senior Andy Dorcely are expected to start, as they will have to face up against some very good quarterback and receiver combos in this conference. My 2009 Prediction: 2nd in MAC West. I think this is going to end up being a very good football team when it is all said and done. I know the Broncos look weak on the defensive side of things, but so do a lot of other teams in the west division this season, and because of that I think there offense is 2nd to only Central Michigan, and that is why I have them picked to finish this high again in 2009.
