2009 WGC Accenture Match Play Championship Predictions

Written February 24, 2009 by Jason Lowry

Its rare that you get so many of the best golfers all in action at the same time, and its not one of the 4 PGA Tour majors, but this Wednesday the 2009 WGC Accenture Match Play Championship gets underway from the Ritz- Carlton GC with the top 64 golfers broken down into 4 brackets much like the NCAA does its March Madness bracketing with its top 64 teams. While the head to head battles are exciting and a lot of fun to watch, the big news surrounding this tournament is Tiger Woods makes his return to action after taking 8 months to rehabilitate his knee. Besides Woods there are ton of big names in action, and we are going to help you get ready for the action with our 3 golfers we feel have a real legit shot at winning this weekend.

TIger Woods +400 odds to win at Sportsbook.com

Normally we don’t like to pick favorites to win, as we try and give you some value picks to make you the most money, but its been so long without this guy in the picture that we just couldn’t resist picking him to win. Woods wouldn’t play if he didn’t think he could win, and we all will get a good glimpse of just how much an improved knee means to his game. It also gives us a good idea of how he will do in the upcoming majors, as he continues on his quest to break the overall record held by Jack Nicklaus. On top of all that Woods is your defending champion of this event, and has won this event a total of 3 times in his career. The crowd that is going to be watching this guy is going to be enormous, and we just don’t think there are many golfers besides Woods that can deal with that kind of attention and pressure.

Geoff Ogilvy +2000 odds to win at Sportsbook.com

Ogilvy won this event back in 2006, and nearly repeated in 2007, but wound up falling just short to Henrik Stenson in the finals. Last year Ogilvy was knocked out in the first round by Justin Leonard, who went all the way to the semifinals before losing to Stewart Cink. The reason we like Ogilvy to bounce back in 2009 is this guy has come out firing to start the season, as he started the season off with a bang winning the Mercedes-Benz Championship, and has made the cut in all 4 events he has played in. One problem he faces this weekend is he is matched up in the same bracket as Woods, but we feel he has the best shot to upset Woods given both players make it that far.

Padraig Harrington +2500 odds to win at Sportsbook.com

For you defending British Open and PGA Championship winner, you have to like these odds for Harrington this weekend even though he got knocked out in the 2nd round last year by Stewart Cink, but Cink was playing lights out all week, as he wound up making it to the finals where he lost to Woods. We like Harrington a lot more than someone like Phil Mickelson who has really struggled to play consistent golf round after round, even though he won the Northern Trust Open last week.
