2009 Wyoming Cowboys NCAA Football Predictions
Written July 28, 2009 by Jason Lowry
The Wyoming Cowboys are heading into the 2009 season off their second straight losing campaign, as the Cowboys went won went 4-8 last year, and finished up tied for last in the Mountain West Conference at 1-7. This year the Cowboys have a 16 starters back, but will have to get use to new head coach Dave Christensen.
The offense for the Cowboys was pretty bad in 2008, as this unit managed to score just 10.8 points per game in conference play. The Cowboys seemed set on letting Chris Stutzriem be the man at quarterback, after he guided the team to two wins in the teams final four games, but Stutzriem wound up transfering and that leaves a big battle for the quarterback spot. Senior Karsten Sneed played sparingly last season, and looks like the favorite heading into the fall, but keep a close eye on junior college transfer Robert Benjamin, true freshman Austyn Carta-Samuels, and redshirt freshman Adam Berry. The Cowboys lost their top two backs from last season, and are hoping that either junior Darius Terry or sophomore James Davis can pick up the slack. The Cowboys bring a bunch of talent back at the receiver position, led by senior wide out Greg Bolling and senior tight end Jesson Salyards. The offensive line will be very inexperienced in the middle as the right guard and the center spot are up for grabs. It looks as though junior Jack Tennant will take over at right guard, while senior Russ Arnold takes over at center. How well this unit performs in 2009 will be greatly determined by the play they get out of whoever wins the quarterback job, and if they can find someone to step in and run the football with some success. For those of you planning on doing some college football betting this upcoming season. I strongly recommend taking advantage of the $500 match bonus going on at BetUS. All you have to do is sign up and deposit at least $500 and you get an additional $500 on the house.
On defense the Cowboys have 8 starters returning to a unit that really struggled at times in 2008. This year the Cowboys figure to be very strong up front with all 3 starters back on the defensive line, led by seniors Fred Givens and John Fletcher. At linebacker the Cowboys figure to experience some growing pains, as they must replace two starters from last season, as the only starter back is sophomore Gabe Knapton. It looks as though fellow sophomore Brain Hendricks and senior Matt Barella are the top candidates to step in and take over the vacated spots. In the secondary the Cowboys should be pretty solid with 3 starters back from last year, including top safety Chris Prosinski and two of the top corners in the conference in sophomore Tashaun Gipson and junior Marcell Gipson. Overall the talent is there for this side of the ball to really excel and improve this season, but only time will tell if that is the case. My 2009 Prediction: 8th in MWC (1-7) Overall (2-10)
This might seem low for a team that has so much coming back, but there are a bunch of question surrounding who will play quarterback and if they will be any good, and while the defense should improve it is still not going to be good enough to win games on its own. The two wins I have the Cowboys taking home this year are the home opener against Weber State and another home game against New Mexico in the middle of the year.
