2009-10 Golden State Warriors Predictions

Written October 22, 2009 by Jack Jones

The Golden State Warriors are not getting much attention for the upcoming 2009-10 season, largely because of their 29-53 record a year ago.  However, this was the league’s youngest team, plus, they never did have their full lineup of players on the floor together at the same time.  This year you won’t find their star, Monta Ellis, missing the first half of the season which should mean they are off to a better start.  This is a team that could be somewhat of a sleeper, especially when the NBA odds makers are listing them at 100-to-1 to win the Western Conference and 150-to-1 to win the NBA Finals.  If you are going to be doing any NBA betting this year, then you have to take a look at the $500 in FREE bonus money BetUS offers our readers.

Backcourt

Ellis only played 25 games a year ago and put up 19 ppg, but only dished out 3.7 assists per game.  He should start at point and with his ability to penetrate that should open things up for shooters.  At shooting guard it should be Kelenna Azubuike who shot 45% from behind the arc while putting up 14.4 ppg a year ago.  Stephen Curry was an excellent passer at the college level and while he’s more of a shooting guard, he’ll back up Ellis at the point.  Anthony Morrow backs up Azubuike and with his 46.7% 3-point shooting gives the team another talented outside threat.

Frontcourt

How is Stephen Jackson going to perform this year?  He’s not happy, but he is coming off a great statistical year in which he scored 20.7 points, dished out 6.5 assists, and grabbed 5.1 rebounds each night.  Corey Maggette is a more than capable backup for him, scoring 18.6 ppg last year in just 31.1 minutes per contest.  Anthony Randolph will start at power forward, and there is a lot of upside for this 20-year-old.  Andris Biedrins will start at center.  He’s a solid shooter (58% last year) and led the team with 11.2 rebounds per game a year ago.  Ronnie Turiaf will spell him in the middle.

Summary

There is a lot of talent here and you know the offense is going to put up a lot of points, but can this team stop anyone and win games away from home?  Probably not enough to get themselves in the playoff mix.  Still, this team was kind of an aberration with how many close games they lost a year ago, so there should be value with them when you start making your NBA picks at the beginning of the year.  With our NBA predictions for the season though, we think the Warriors finish fourth in the Pacific right behind the Clippers and miss out on the playoffs.
