2009-10 Sacramento Kings Predictions
Written October 22, 2009 by Jack Jones
The days of the Sacramento Kings being a contender out West are a distant memory. Arco Arena used to be one of the toughest places to play, but the fans stayed at home instead of heading in to watch a team that went 17-65 overall and 11-30 at home. Things didn’t go much better when searching for a new head coach as the team ended up with Paul Westphal after being shunned by Eddie Jordan and Kurt Rambis. They are projected by the NBA odds makers to be one of the worst teams again this year, with an over/under win total of 23.5, 200-to-1 odds to win the NBA Finals, and 150-to-1 just to make it out of the Western Conference. Backcourt
Rookie Tyreke Evans will be the starting point guard and he should create matchup problems for the opposition. He is more of a scorer than a passer, but his 6′6″ size will make it tough for opposing points. Kevin Martin is the face of the franchise and is coming off a solid year in which he scored 24.6 ppg while shooting 42% from 3-point range. He does need to shoot better overall though with a 42% mark. Hopefully Evans will make things easier on him. Beno Udrih adds depth.
Frontcourt
Desmond Mason is coming off a disappointing season and is hoping for a career revival here in Sacramento. Over at power forward the team has high hopes for second-year man Jason Thompson. Thompson shot just under 50% while putting up 11.1 points and 7.4 rebounds as a rookie. You have to think he’ll build off those numbers in his sophomore campaign. The team really needs more out of center Spencer Hawes, who pulled down 7.1 rebounds while scoring 11.4 points per game last year. Rookie Jon Brockman might eat some of his minutes due to the hard work he is putting in and the all-out hustle he gives. Andres Nocioni gives the Kings depth at the three spot and was very serviceable in his short stint with the team a year ago. Donte Greene and Sean May will provide extra bodies off of the pine.
Summary
The Kings record was a little misleading since Martin missed 31 games a year ago, but that doesn’t mean they are going to be vastly improved this season. The team was dead last in defending the 3-point shot, 29th in rebounding, and 29th in turnovers. With my NBA predictions I don’t see a lot of hope as I see the Kings ending up last in the Pacific and nowhere near playoff contention.
