2010 Mississippi State College Football Predictions

Written July 26, 2010 by Rock Henderson

The Mississippi State Bulldogs will attempt to improve on a 5-7 2009 season under first year head coach Dan Mullen.  The former Florida Gators offensive coordinator took on the tough task of turning around a program that competes in the SEC West division with the likes of LSU and defending national champion Alabama.  14 starters return with hopes of reaching only their second bowl game since the 2000 season.  Featuring a raucous atmosphere in Wade Stadium, the Dogs are capable of pulling the upset at home as a season finale win over then #20 Ole Miss proved.  Mississippi State is a +5000 long shot to win the SEC title.  View our full conference breakdown in the 2010 SEC College Football predictions article.

Coach Mullen brought the spread attack that was run successfully with the Gators with him and the Bulldogs saw drastic improvement in year 1.  The offense scored over 10 points more per contest compared to 2009 while gaining almost 100 yards more also.  Mullen’s offensive mind was the main reason for his hire and he did not disappoint.  RB Anthony Dixon made a quick transition to the new offense by rushing for almost 1400 yards and 12 touchdowns.  The first team All SEC selection left school as the team’s all time leading rusher.  Robert Elliott will compete with Montrell Conner and junior college transfer Vick Ballard for the starting spot in the backfield.  Quarterback is a little more settled with dual threat Junior Chris Relf most likely getting the nod, but he will get pushed by 6’5 red shirt frosh Tyler Russell.  Blue chip recruit Chad Bumphis should flourish in his second year for the Bulldogs after catching 32 passes for four touchdowns in his freshman year.  Leon Berry is electric in the return game averaging almost 27 per kickoff return and is going to play a bigger role in the passing game this season.  The offensive line is experienced returning four starters that paved the way for Dixon’s record breaking season running the ball.

The defensive performance of last year stayed consistent with past seasons as MSU struggled to stop the run but were respectable against the pass.  You don’t see it often, but Mullen installed two defensive coordinators to run the unit in 2010.  Ball hawk safety Jonathan Banks made a name for himself by intercepting Tim Tebow twice last year returning both for touchdowns.  Seven starters return including all four positions on the defensive front.  LB Kyle Wright is the top returning tackler tallying 82 stops as a junior.  There has to be improvement from this side of the ball if the Bulldogs want to have any chance of going bowling at the end of the season.

Scheduling wise, MSU faces another stern test after going up against the toughest schedule in the nation last year.  They open with Memphis at home and then get five days to prepare for their SEC opener vs Auburn.  Road games at Florida, Alabama and LSU are losses waiting to be finalized.  This program is heading in the right direction, but is still a couple of years away from competing on an annual basis.  I call for a 6-6 putting them on the cusp of bowl eligibility.
