San Francisco 49ers vs. New York Giants Picks & Spread

Written October 16, 2008 by Jason Lowry

Editors Note: Jason Lowry has the winner in this game picked out and ready to go, as part of his complete NFL picks package for week 7.

This weekend the New York Giants will look to bounce back from their first loss of the season last week against the Browns, as they head out west to take on the San Francisco 49ers. Many thought the Giants would roll all over the Browns, but that was not the case at all, as the Browns put it to the Giants 35-14. As for the 49ers they too come off a loss, but they were up 26-17 going into the 4th and completely fell apart and wound up losing 40-26. The oddsmakers are expecting a bounce back from the Giants, as New York comes in 10.5 point favorites over the 49ers at BetUS.com

The Giants come into the game this weekend wondering what happened to Eli Manning, as he by far had his worst game of the season throwing 3 interceptions and really hurting the Giants chances of staying undefeated. The Giants did get some good production out of the running game as Derrick Ward and Brandon Jacobs combined to run for 168 and a score. Though we don’t expect Manning to struggle as bad this week, there is a good chance the Giants won’t need his arm as the 49ers are giving up 142 yards a game on the ground. Look for the Giants to send the ball to Plaxico Burress more this week, as they look to get him more involved in the offense.

The Giants defense really came out flat and allowed the Browns to have their biggest offensive output of the season. The Browns not only ran the ball well with Jamal Lewis, but quarterback Derrick Anderson finally looked like the Pro Bowl quarterback from last season, as he threw for 310 yards and 2 scores. The Giants defense had no answer for Braylon Edwards who also had his best game catching 5 balls for 154 yards. The big problem we saw with the Giants defense was they were unable to get much pressure at all on Anderson, as they had zero turnovers and failed to get to the quarterback once. We expect this defense to come out ready to prove a point and get after the 49ers this weekend. Bet Giants -10.5 at BetUS.com

The 49ers have to wonder what happened in that 4th quarter against the Eagles, as they wound up turning the ball over 3 times including an interception for a touchdown that put it away late in the 4th quarter. After the offense rolled with Frank Gore running for 101 yards and a score, the 49ers racked up a -2 yards in the 4th quarter when it mattered most. JT O’Sullivan continues to struggle at quarterback, as he has thrown 7 interceptions in the last 3 weeks, and you have to wonder how ong the team is going to stick with O’Sullivan behind center. If Sullivan continues to play and turn the ball over, there is a good chance the 49ers will continue to end up on the wrong side of things.

The 49ers played pretty well on defense, considering the offenses turnovers led to 23 of the Eagles 40 points last week. Even without his top 2 receivers McNabb was able to throw for 280 yards and 2 scores, against a defense that had been pretty good against the pass this season. The 49ers weren’t much better against the run as backup Correll Buckhalter ran for 93 yards and a score. Look for the 49ers to look to stop the Giants running attack this weekend and hope that Manning continues to make mistakes that allows them to stay in the game. Bet 49ers +10.5 at BetUS.com
