San Francisco 49ers at New Orleans Saints Free NFL Picks
Written September 25, 2008 by Brad Marchetti

The surprising San Francisco 49ers are off to a hot 2-1 start under new offensive coordinator Mike Martz’s dynamic offensive system. This Sunday in the San Francisco 49ers vs New Orleans Saints game, the 49ers, will be put to the test by a strong team at home. The Saints are not as bad as their 1-2 record indicates. The Saints have only been outscored by a total of 3 points (80-83) in their first 3 games. Saints QB Drew Brees has a 103.9 passer rating with the offense still doing damage through the air. The 49ers are still a question mark but if they can beat New Orleans on the road they should be considered contenders. The NFL betting odds for the San Francisco 49ers vs New Orleans Saints game is New Orleans -7.
49ers starting RB Frank Gore is a leader and a game changer that has excelled to start the season. Gore (4.8 Ypc. 3 TD’s) has been tearing holes in the turf with his passionate style of play. San Francisco QB J.T O’Sullivan has a firm grasp of Martz’s system by leading the 49ers to an impressive 342.0 yards per game of offense. The Saints have improved on their defensive front seven with players like DE Bobby McCrary and LB Jonathan Vilma making their presence felt. The Saints are 3rd from last in total defense, with injuries in the secondary being their undoing. The Saints will need to put pressure on O’Sullivan or else they could get burned deep by the 49ers wideouts. TE Vernon Davis (4.45 40-speed) has big-play ability. 15th year veteran WR Issac Bruce is looking like he is 25 again and, the 49ers O-line has done a terrific job run blocking. San Francisco’s pass-protection has allowed 5 sacks however.

The New Orleans Saints cerebral stud QB Drew Brees (103.9 passer rating 980 yards passing 5 TD’s) is having another Pro-Bowl season. The problem for the Saints offense is a consistent ground game from RB’s Pierre Thomas and Reggie Bush. The Saints are not sure when RB Deuce McAllister will be returning. Thomas is a power runner with good inside running skills but he is a downgrade from Deuce. The Saints would be better leaving Reggie Bush almost exclusively as a wideout. Bush (4.30 40-speed) has 26 receptions and 2 TD’s as a wideout. San Francisco has quietly built a strong defense that is ranked 5th in the NFC. Patrick Willis has been a beast at outside linebacker in 49ers 3-4 defense. Cornerback Nate Clements has also played well and he will be up against a hobbled Saints wideout corps. The Saints recently lost TE Jeremy Shockey for 3-6 weeks and will not have WR Marques Colston. WR Robert Meachem (4.35 40-speed) is a vertical threat that must step-up in place of Colston. The 49ers will need pass-rush specialist DE Justin Smith to disrupt the rhythm of accurate Saint QB Drew Brees who is completing 74.3% of his passes. The NFL betting odds for the San Francisco 49ers vs New Orleans Saints game OVERUNDER is at 46 points.
Frank Gore has been the catalyst to the San Francisco offense that has responded well to Martz’s system. The Saints are 3-10 as the home favorite but, the jury is still out on a San Francisco team that went 5-11 last season. One x-factor in New Orleans is returner Reggie Bush. Bush is averaging 21.3 yards per punt return.
Predicted Score: Saints 27, 49ers 20
