49ers vs Vikings Line
Written by Riley Martin
Big NFL matchup on Sunday as the Minnesota Vikings and Brett Favre open up the home opener with the San Francisco 49rs. Both teams are 2-0 to start the season. So far so good with Favre in Minnesota and Mike Singletary continues to show why he is most deserving of being an NFL head coach. The 49rs could be one of the NFL’s biggest surprises this year in fact, with a chance of winning 8 plus games. With the addition of Favre, the Vikings should once again reach the 10-win mark, possibly 11 or 12. Anyway this particular game should be a good one. NFL odds makers currently have the Vikings as 6.5-point favorites in Minnesota, which makes sense. That doesn’t mean the 49ers can’t take this one though.
Are the 49rs pretenders or contenders? Well, Mike Singletary will have a much better idea after this game on Sunday. Sure any win in the NFL is impressive, but wins against Arizona and Seattle don’t show too much. The Cardinals win was big but Arizona doesn’t look like the same team as last year, and they most likely won’t be. One part of this 49rs team that should be satisfying to Niners fans is the offense. Frank Gore has been tremendous so far racking up 237 rush yards, third only to Titans’ Chris Johnson and Vikings’ Adrian Peterson. Quarterback Shuan Hill is also performing well so far and moved to 9-3 when starting for San Francisco. He has a 64.9 completion percentage, 351 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions to start the season. As for the defense, they gave up 20 points to a potent Arizona offense in week one and only 10 to Seattle in week two. Minnesota’s offense definitely falls in the top 10 though and should look to put up at least 20.
Favre has done great to start the season but he’s not the main part of Singletary’s game plan this week. I’m pretty sure we would all agree that would go to Adrian Peterson, the NFL’s top back. His break out speed and ability to dance around the NFL’s best defenses is what makes him so special. Those lucky enough to see the highlights of week one’s game at Cleveland know exactly what I’m talking about when he broke a long run around the outside for a touchdown, completely embarrassing the Cleveland secondary. This Vikings offense looks like one to be reckoned with in 09’ with this type of running game and a quarterback like Brett Favre. Favre leads the NFL with a 77.1 completion percentage thus far and has also completed 66.7% of his third down passes.
Sunday’s game is an interesting one as a win for San Francisco could prove the start of something special, while a Vikings win doesn’t show much. However, I still see Minnesota taking this one. They will be energized and ready to go on Sunday when they open up their first home game in the Metrodome. The atmosphere should be crazy too as Brett Favre makes his debut in front of thousands of Vikings fans. I believe in San Francisco but just not enough to take them this week. Ill go with Minnesota to win, and win by the spread.
Final Score Prediction: Minnesota 27 San Francisco 17
Riley’s Pick: Minnesota – 6.5
Got something to say?
