Air Force 2009 Football Predictions
Written June 30, 2009 by InfoPlays
The Falcons gave Utah its biggest scare last season, losing in the final minute to the Utes. Air Force’s 17 victories the past two seasons is their best back-to-back campaigns since 1998-99 when they won 18 games. The Falcons are back in the bowl picture again this season, and head coach Troy Calhoun is starting to see the results of his recruiting. Air Force will remain in the top half of the MWC at least until some of the league’s new coaches raise their programs. When the season rolls around, make sure you check out the NCAA football odds at Sportsbook.com for early lines and great bonuses!
Offense: Tim Jefferson took over as the starting quarterback midway through last season. Through 8 starts, Jefferson connected on 44 of 80 passes for 655 yards and five touchdowns. Those numbers wouldn’t sit will with BYU’s Max Hall, but for a freshman quarterback in the Air Force systems it’s pretty solid. He led the Falcons on a five-game winning streak, and Armed Forces Bowl appearance, and he took down MWC Freshman of the Year honors. Still, that doesn’t guarantee he’ll be taking the first snap in 2009.
Jefferson missed the bulk of spring practice to concentrate on academics. With Jefferson gone, tailback Asher Clark switched back to his original position of quarterback after rushing for 588 yards last season. Clark suffered a minor knee injury, so no competition ever developed. Those two and Connor Dietz will battle it out in fall camp. Clark could still wind up as the starting running back. Four-year starter in left guard Nick Charles heads the offensive line. He was a second team all-conference selection last season. Senior Chris Campbell is another candidate for postseason honors, so the offensive line should be a strength this season.

Defense: 7 defensive starters return to the Air Force Falcons this season, led by middle linebacker Ken Lamendola who ranked third in the MWC in tackles with 118 stops. He draw comparison to Air Force alums and former NFL players Chris Gizzi and Anthony Schlegel. The line loses Jake Paulson, who had 14.5 tackles for loss last season. Senior Ben Garland, who had 7.5 tackles for loss, takes over the leadership role. The secondary may be the strength of this defense. Senior Chris Thomas will be going for his third 100-tackle season at strong safety.
Thomas is the only senior in the group, but he is in good company. Cornerback Reggie Rembert missed spring ball with an undisclosed non-football issue, but he’ll be ready to go this fall. Sophomore cornerback Anthony Wright made 10 starts as a freshman. Sophomore safety Jon Davis is the only projected starter in the secondary without much on-the-field experience.
