Akron NCAA Football Predictions 2009
Written July 24, 2009 by InfoPlays
The Akron Zips break in their new stadium with coach J.D. Brookhart’s job on the line. The book could be closed on his tenure in Akron if he doesn’t at least finish in the hunt for a division title, something the program hasn’t contended for since taking down the 2005 crown. The Zips have a chance to run the table at home this season with no bowl teams from a year ago on their home slate. Offense: Injuries spoiled the spring, setting back the offense under first-year coordinator Shane Montgomery, who served as the Miami (Ohio) coach before coming here. Four familiar faces are back on the offensive line to safeguard erratic quarterback Chris Jacquemain. He had loads of promise coming to Akron, but now he has one year left in his senior season to turn that promise into production. Quarterbacks coach Walt Harris was hired to tutor Jacquemain and support Montgomery to further the offense. There will be a quick hook of Jacquemain stumbles, and Matt Rodgers appears to be game-ready is this happens.
Senior running back Alex Allen will carry the load now with Dennis Kennedy out of the picture. He was hobbled in spring practice after playing just three games last season because of hip surgery. He averaged an impressive 4.8 yards/carry when healthy. He’ll have plenty of competition, led by Louisville transfer Dale Martin who just has to stay out of the training room. Wide receiver Deryn Bowser made the most out of last season as a junior college transfer, catching 64 balls for 785 yards. He and Andre Jones, who had 47 catches for 678 yards and seven touchdowns, got minimal work in the spring under the new offense because of injuries. Both are clearly proven targets and should be ready to go come fall practice.

Defense: Akron needs to clean up their defense. The Zips gave up 31.3 points and 187.2 rushing yards/game last season. There are many new faces along the front seven, but Akron’s secondary will be the anchor of this team behind star defensive end Almondo Sewell and Iowa transfer Ryan Bain. Bain sat out last season with injuries and NCAA sanctions. Junior newcomer Phil Tonga is in contention for a starting spot. Linebacker Mike Thomas was second on the team in 2008 with 81 stops and a team-high 8.5 tackles for loss with two forced fumbles. He is smaller than most running backs he tackles, but he gets praise for his ability to run with instincts and intelligence that you cannot coach.
Aaron Williams will help out Thomas at linebacker, playing in 10 games last season. He looked ready to take off in spring drills and was clearly the offseason star of this unit. Cornerback Miguel Graham, a junior college transfer, will get his chance to start this season after playing a lot of football between the junior college ranks and at Akron. He has All-MAC ability, leading the Zips in picks (three) and finishing with 70 tackles last year.
