Alabama at Mississippi State College Football Odds

Written November 13, 2009 by Kyle Hunter

The Alabama Crimson Tide are ranked #2 in the BCS standings and they are on a collision course with the Florida Gators, who they will meet in the SEC Championship game. The Crimson Tide need to make sure they don’t overlook any of these games before that match up, and Mississippi State has improved a lot so they could give the Tide some trouble. Mississippi State is a program on the rise that would like nothing more than to spoil Alabama’s season and put themselves on the map. Alabama has fought off two major challenges from Tennessee and LSU in back to back weeks, but they are now 9-0 and still in position to play for the BCS title game if they can just keep winning. Mark Ingram is the main focal point for this offense, and he is now quickly becoming one of the favorites for the Heisman Trophy this year. Ingram is averaging an amazing 6.6 yards per carry on 175 carries so far this year. Greg McElroy had almost no experience before this year, but he has stepped in and done a nice job at quarterback for Alabama. McElroy has had some rough patches against South Carolina and Tennessee, but he played well last weekend against LSU. Julio Jones is the star wide receiver on the team and he could break out at any point. The Crimson Tide defense is as consistently great as they come. The defense is allowing just 11 points per game and a measly 242 yards per game. The defense may get overlooked at times, but they are the primary reason the Tide are where they are today.

Mississippi State is 4-5 on the year after a nice win at Kentucky last weekend. Last year the Mississippi State offense was dreadful, but they are much improved this year. The offense is averaging 27 points per game primarily due to its impressive rushing attack. Anthony Dixon is over 1,000 yards on the season and averages 5.5 yards per carry and quarterback Tyson Lee is a solid runner as well. Lee has had more success running than he has passing, as evidenced by his 4 touchdowns and 11 interceptions this season. All year long the Bulldogs have been hurt by turnovers at terrible times, which has cost them at least a game or two. The defense is pretty good, especially against the pass.

The college football betting lines show Alabama as a 12.5 point road favorite in this game. The posted total has been set at 43.5 points. A couple of trends to consider when making your college football picks this weekend are: the under is 8-2 in the last 10 games between these teams, and the Bulldogs are 7-1 against the spread as home underdogs.

Mississippi State has showed they can play with the best at home. They should have beaten LSU at the end of the game, but fell just short, and later they lost to Florida by just 10 points at home. I have a feeling the Bulldogs will be up for this game and could give Alabama a contest at least for a while, but in the end the better talent and the great defense will probably win out.
