Alabama Crimson Tide vs. Kentucky Wildcats NCAA Predictions

Written September 30, 2008 by Jason Lowry

This weekend the No. 2 Alabama Crimson Tide (5-0) get ready to defend their ranking against the undefeated Kentucky Wildcats (4-0). The Wildcats record might be a little misleading since they have yet to play a conference game, but this team did go to Louisville and manhandle them 27-2 for their first win of the season. The Tide also go their season off to a great start when they knocked then No. 9 Clemson, and last week when they went into Georgia and beat the No. 3 Bulldogs. The oddsmakers aren’t thinking this one is going to be close, as they have the Crimson Tide favored by 16.5 points over the Wildcats at Sportsbook.com

Kentucky comes in looking pretty impressive and its hard to see why this team hasn’t found their way in the top 25. The Wildcats closest game came in their 3rd game when they were able to beat Middle Tennessee by just 6 points. Last week they got back on track as they handed Western Kentucky a 41-3 stomping. The offense thrives on the running game of multiple backs including Alfonso Smith, Tony Dixon, and Derrick Locke. All 3 found the endzone last week, while the team went on to run for 216 yards. This offense has struggled at times moving the football, but seems to get it clicking when needed. Quarterback Mike Hartline has to be on his game this weekend, and there is no question they will be looking for Dicky Lyons who leads the team with 25 receptions.

The Wildcats defense has been pretty solid all season long, and really stepped it up last week to shutdown Western Kentucky. Just a week earlier the team had its struggles stopping the spread offense of Middle Tennessee, but last week they allowed Western Kentucky to throw for just 15 yards the whole game. This defense is going to face its toughest opponent yet, and we aren’t counting this unit out. If the Wildcats are going to pull off the upset this unit will have to play the best it has all season. Now we get to an Alabama team that had its closest game of the season last week against Georgia, but they still managed to win by double digits. Quarterback John Parker Wilson continues to look solid completing 67% of his passes on the season, and was solid last week throwing for 205 yards and a score on 13 of 16 passing against a very good Georgia defense. Glen Coffee continues to be a force in the running game as piled on 86 yards and 2 scores last week carrying the load 23 times. True freshman receiver Julio Jones continues to be Wilson’s favorite target, and it was no different last week as he grabbed 5 balls for 94 yards and a score, and now 4 TD catches on the season.

The Crimson Tide’s defense has been pretty much lights out all season long and nobody has been able to get much of anything going on the ground against the front of this defense, just ask Georgia’s Heisman hopeful Knowshon Moreno who was able to muster just 34 yards last week. This spells bad news for the Wildcats as so much of their offense depends on the run. Head coach Nick Saban will not let his defense let up, so expect them to keep the Wildcats quiet this weekend. The college football odds makers make this a tough one, but you have to remember that the 3 toughest games the Crimson Tide have played have been on the road.
