Alabama at Purdue

Purdue will get its toughest game to date when they host Alabama this Saturday. These two teams faced off last season, and the Crimson Tide jumped out to an early lead, before allowing the Boilermakers to fight back take home the win.

The Boilermakers were considered to be a National Title contender this season, but the loss of senior forward Robbie Hummel to another injury has this team back in the middle of the pack. The Boilermakers have started the 2010 season with a pretty easy schedule and for the most part have dominated their opponents. The only blemish on the record for Purdue is a disappointing loss to Richmond in the Chicago Tourney title game.

Purdue might not have the offense they expected without Hummel this season, but they are still extremely tough on the defensive end of the floor and figure to give the Crimson Tide all they can handle. Offensively the Boilermakers are led by seniors E’Twaun Moore and JaJuan Johnson. Moore has been outstanding to start the season averaging 20 points, six rebounds and three assists a game. Johnson is second in scoring, averaging 18 points and is the team leader, grabbing eight rebounds a game. Johnson figures to dominate the paint against Alabama, and it will be important for the Boilermakers to get him the ball early.

Alabama with two easy wins over Florida A&M and Troy, but really looked bad in the Paradise Jam Tournament, losing all three games to the likes of Seton Hall, Iowa, and St. Peters. Both Seton Hall and Iowa figure to finish in the bottom of their respective conferences, and the loss to St. Peters is simply hard to explain, as the Crimson are much better than what they showed in that game. Alabama has bounced back with wins over Alabama A&M and Southern Alabama, and will have a chance to prove they are more respectable than what they have displayed so far this season.

The key for the Crimson Tide will be keeping the game close early and allow themselves a chance to make a run in the second half for the big upset. Tony Mitchell, JaMychal Green, and Senario Hillman all come into the game averaging over 10 points a game, and all three are going to have to play their best game of the season for Alabama to win this game. The Crimson Tide are not a very high scoring team, and appear to be outsized by Purdue. That means Alabama must play extremely well on the defense and not allow the Boilermakers and second chance opportunities.
